Who We Are:

Yipirinya School is one of only a few Independent Aboriginal Community-Driven Schools in Australia. It was founded by Indigenous Elders in Alice Springs and remains under the control of a 100% Aboriginal Board. The only school in Australia that teaches four Aboriginal languages alongside English, Yipirinya School has a unique history and is at the cutting edge of Aboriginal Two-Way Education.

As we continue to strengthen our Language Initiative Project, we're looking for a passionate and experienced Teacher Linguist to join our small but mighty leadership team. You'll work alongside highly experienced Aboriginal Language Teachers, many of whom have deep cultural and linguistic knowledge — they just need your support to bring it all to life in the classroom.

Your Next Opportunity:

We're seeking a full-time Teacher Linguist to join us in Alice Springs, NT.

This is a newly created role focused on delivering the NT Indigenous Languages and Cultures Framework through a structured, culturally responsive Language Learning on Country Program. This means you won’t just teach — you'll guide, mentor, co-design, and elevate the careers of Aboriginal educators leading this work on the ground.

Your day will typically begin by supporting the morning language block (9am–1pm), followed by collaborative planning and curriculum development in the afternoon.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the design and delivery of structured language programs across four Aboriginal languages

  • Coaching and mentoring Aboriginal Language Teachers, and building their confidence in literacy and curriculum leadership

  • Leading the planning of the Language Learning on Country Program and ensuring it aligns with NT curriculum standards

  • Collaborating with senior staff to embed bi-cultural and bi-lingual pedagogy across the school

  • Identifying and curating culturally appropriate learning materials, and safeguarding their long-term use

  • Championing the Language Initiative Project with a strong classroom teaching lens

  • Supporting literacy development in Indigenous languages — enabling students to read and write in their first language

  • Building strong working relationships with Aboriginal educators, families, and community Elders

What You Will Bring to the Team:

You’re not just a linguist — you’re a qualified classroom teacher with deep respect for bicultural learning models and Indigenous knowledge systems.

To be successful in this role, you must have:

  • A recognised teaching qualification

  • Teacher Registration with the NT Teacher Registration Board (or ability to obtain)

  • A valid Ochre Card, Police Check, and Driver’s Licence

  • Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal communities or in remote/regional contexts

  • Knowledge of Indigenous languages and their application in education

  • Resilience, cultural humility, and the ability to thrive in a remote teaching environment

  • A commitment to nurturing the career pathways of Aboriginal Language Teachers

Additionally, candidates with the following experience will be highly regarded:

  • TESOL, EAL/D, or Applied Linguistics postgraduate qualifications

  • Experience in bilingual or bicultural education

  • Familiarity with the NT Indigenous Languages and Cultures Framework

  • Previous work in community-led education or remote schools

You’re someone who brings professionalism, compassion, and cultural awareness to everything you do. You’re able to navigate the challenges of working in a cross-cultural space — and you’re excited by the impact you can have when it all comes together.

The Benefits:

This is a leadership-track role with a competitive salary of $135,000 – $150,000 (based on experience), plus Superannuation and full PBI salary packaging benefits (worth up to ~$16,000 extra take-home pay).

Additional benefits include:

  • Relocation assistance for the right candidate

  • Six weeks annual leave

  • Professional development support and external training opportunities

  • A work laptop, access to all teaching resources, and a strong leadership team

  • Opportunities to shape curriculum and mentor Indigenous educators

  • A school culture that celebrates inclusion, language, and identity

  • The chance to help preserve endangered languages in a nationally recognised Two-Way Learning model

Please note: YSC is guided by NTPS educators 2024-2027 Enterprise Agreement.

Make Your Mark:

If you're a passionate, qualified educator who values linguistic and cultural preservation, this is your opportunity to drive real impact and contribute to a future where Indigenous language and education thrive, side by side.
