About North Australian Aboriginal Family Legal Service (NAAFLS)

NAAFLS is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation and an independent Family Violence Prevention Legal Service. We provide culturally safe legal and non-legal wraparound support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victim survivors of domestic, family, and sexual violence (DFSV) in more than 45 remote communities across the Top End, East Arnhem and Big Rivers regions of the Northern Territory.

With offices in Darwin, Katherine, and Nhulunbuy, our unique bi-cultural model pairs Aboriginal case support workers with solicitors to provide trauma-informed, holistic services. Our work is founded on the belief that Aboriginal communities must lead the policies, laws, and systems that affect them, and that both men and women play a role in ending violence.

NAAFLS is guided by principles of Cultural Respect, Collaboration, Trust, and Courage. As a leading authority on DFSV in the Northern Territory, we advocate for systemic change while walking alongside the communities we serve.

About You

You identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and bring a strong connection to community, culture, and country. You may have previous experience working in community services or with families impacted by domestic and family violence — but what’s most important is your cultural knowledge, your lived experience, and your deep understanding of the issues facing Aboriginal people in the Top End.

Formal qualifications are desirable, but not required. We’re looking for people who know the communities we work with, who speak the languages, understand the kinship systems, and have the trust of those around them.

As our ideal candidate, you will be:

  • Empathetic, non-judgmental, and able to build strong, trusting relationships
  • Deeply respectful of cultural practices and able to ensure cultural safety for clients
  • Someone who can meet people where they are, and walk alongside them during times of crisis
  • Emotionally resilient and able to support clients through confronting situations
  • A team player who values collaboration, communication, and shared outcomes
  • Clear and calm under pressure, and comfortable with short-term (12-week) casework

This role is ideal for someone who is motivated to be part of change in their own community — someone who sees the value in providing practical support to help families move safely out of violence and into stronger, more independent futures.

Please note: You must identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander to apply, in accordance with Section 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975.

You will need a current NT Driver’s Licence, Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card), and a clear Criminal History Check.
