About the Organisation

Yamatji Marlpa Aboriginal Corporation (YMAC) is the native representative body for the Traditional owners of the Pilbara, Murchison and Gascoyne regions of Western Australia. The Corporation is run by an Aboriginal Board of Directors who are committed to protecting the Yamatji and Marlpa country by providing a range of professional services to their clients.

The Corporation's work includes:

About the Opportunity

Yamatji Marlpa Aboriginal Corporation (YMAC) currently has exciting openings for a number of Anthropologists to join their teams based in Perth, Port Hedland, Karratha and Geraldton!

This is a rare career-defining opportunity to join the Research and Heritage Unit of one of the leading and most successful Native Title Representative Bodies in Australia.

The primary aim of these diverse roles is to conduct anthropological research efficiently and effectively, including extensive field-based native title and heritage research in remote areas.

More specifically, your duties will include:

  • Undertaking research (including primary field research with claimants and documentary research) to provide evidence for native title claims and other actions under the NTA 1993 or other relevant legislation;
  • Ensuring that the operations and native title obligations of the organisation are undertaken efficiently;
  • Assisting and working in cooperation with research consultants engaged from time to time;
  • Liaising with Senior Legal Officers, Anthropologists and external consultants to develop effective relationships with all parties;
  • Advising the organisation on native title research issues, or activities under relevant legislation;
  • Preparing written and verbal reports on research and other activities; and
  • Completing timely and accurate information for connection reports in support of native title claims, adhering to court set deadlines.

The ideal candidates will hold tertiary qualifications in Australian Anthropology (preferably with honours), and will ideally have progress towards post-graduate qualifications. YMAC is happy to receive applications from experienced Anthropologists and recent Graduates, though applicants with at least 1 year working in an anthropological environment will have an advantage.

It is vital for this role that you have experience working with Aboriginal groups, and skills in effectively and sensitively communicating with Aboriginal people. You will need to demonstrate cultural awareness of relevant Indigenous groups / bodies, and knowledge of Native Title Legislation and requirements. These positions will suit applicants with excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as attention to detail and sound report writing skills.

Excellent computer literacy, the ability to multi-task to meet deadlines, and a positive attitude to both internal and external client service will also be essential to succeed in this role. All applicants require a current manual driver's licence.

The successful candidates will be rewarded with excellent remuneration packages circa $51,000 - $71,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications, plus salary sacrifice options. Relocation packages will also be offered to suitable applicants where applicable.
