A Frontline Role Supporting Community Standards

Tenterfield Shire Council is looking for a full-time Community Compliance Officer (Ranger) based in Tenterfield, NSW. Reporting to the Manager Open Space, Regulatory & Utilities, you will deliver regulatory compliance and enforcement services across the Shire while supporting community safety, companion animal management, and local amenity outcomes.

This is a diverse and hands-on role offering a unique mix of field-based compliance work, community engagement, investigations, animal management, and operational support — ideal for someone who enjoys variety and autonomy in their day-to-day work.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Delivering compliance and regulatory functions in accordance with relevant legislation and Council policies
  • Undertaking companion animal control duties, inspections, impounding, and enforcement activities
  • Responding to customer complaints and emergency call-outs relating to animal control and public compliance matters
  • Investigating breaches of legislation, gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and preparing reports
  • Issuing infringement notices and undertaking enforcement activities relating to illegal camping, littering, abandoned vehicles, overgrown allotments, and public signage
  • Maintaining the Companion Animal Pound and ensuring the humane management and care of impounded animals
  • Managing records, databases, and administrative reporting requirements accurately and efficiently
  • Assisting with saleyards operations and supporting sale-day activities when required
  • Promoting positive community relationships through professional customer engagement and communication
  • Contributing to workplace safety, continuous improvement initiatives, and operational effectiveness

Bring Your Compliance Experience to a Role That Makes a Difference

To qualify, you will need demonstrated experience in regulatory compliance, companion animal control, enforcement activities, or a similar field, along with a Certificate III or IV in Local Government Compliance, Law Enforcement, Investigations, or a related field.

You will also require:

  • A current Class C Driver’s Licence
  • Animal/livestock handling experience
  • Sound knowledge of relevant legislation and regulatory processes
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills
  • The ability to interpret and apply legislation lawfully and effectively
  • Basic computer literacy, including Microsoft Office applications
  • A General Construction Induction (White) Card
  • The ability to work independently while contributing positively within a small team environment

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

  • Experience preparing evidence briefs and attending court proceedings
  • Experience using SEINS or similar infringement systems
  • Knowledge of GIS systems
  • First Aid certification
