About the Organisation
The Aboriginal community of Walgett lobbied for an Aboriginal Medical Service in the late 70's. In 1986, Walgett Aboriginal Medical Service (WAMS) opened its doors, and the Board of Directors moved a resolution to provide primary health care to all people in the community. This has been the case ever since, with 40% of clients being non-Aboriginal.
Services offered include: public health, family health, sexual health, dental health, mental health and GP Clinical Services. The not-for-profit organisation also provides a diverse range of health programs, including drug and alcohol.

About the Opportunity
Walgett Aboriginal Medical Service has an excellent opportunity for a Medicare Officer to join their friendly team in Walgett.
Reporting to the Finance Officer, this is a pivotal role for someone with an eye for detail and who knows their way around the Medicare Australia processes.
You will be responsible for the management of the billing, collecting, post-payment review and correspondence functions of all Medicare accounts in this diverse and multi-facility organisation.
More specifically, some of your daily duties will include:
- Overall coordination and effective functioning of all Medicare administration processes within WAMS;
- Daily reconciliation of Medicare item numbers and Medicare benefits paid to WAMS;
- Proper record keeping of all WAMS Medicare Revenue accrual processes;
- Contributing towards an annual Medicare Revenue forecasting process for WAMS
- Preparing Quarterly and Annual Medicare Revenue Statements; and
- Working with the Finance Officer and Practice Managers to ensure that WAMS meets all required Medicare Australia benchmarks.
To be successful in this position, you will have a demonstrated background working within the Medicare Australia Health Insurance process, with proven experience in preparing Medicare claims, organising provider numbers for staff, checking and recording of Medicare reimbursements and correcting faulty claims. This role requires a details-oriented person with high level computer and database skills and familiarity in using computerised accounting and health data software packages, including Excel, Medical Director and Ferret.
In addition to your Medicare expertise, you'll need to have a strong customer service focus, giving you the ability to communicate effectively with the general public, and establish an effective relationship with the Medicare Liaison Officer for the Western Region. You'll be skilled in training staff in technical matters, and patient in assisting staff with relevant paperwork and documentation.
