About the Organisation

As a non-profit government funded community organisation, the Cairns Community Legal Centre Inc strives to make a real difference in the lives of the socially and financially disadvantaged.

The Centre provides free legal services for the benefit of members of the community ranging from their core service to disability discrimination, seniors support, family law and consumer law services. Their qualified practitioners provide legal advice and ongoing casework services, along with community education and some law reform and social policy work.

The Centre is available to people who live in Cairns and Far North Queensland and is funded by a variety of sources including the Commonwealth and State Governments. The Seniors Legal and Support Service is specifically funded by the Queensland Department of Communities.

About the Opportunity

Cairns Community Legal Centre has an excellent opportunity for a full time Social Worker to join their team in Cairns.

You'll be working as part of the Seniors Legal and Support Service, which provides legal work for the benefit of seniors who are at risk of, or experiencing, abuse or financial exploitation. Working closely with the Seniors Service Solicitor, your role will involve providing clients with short term counselling and ongoing casework support as well as providing community education, in order to help prevent, identify and respond to such cases of abuse and/or exploitation.

More specifically, your duties will involve:

  • Providing short term counselling, needs assessment, support plan management and advocacy work;
  • Attending appointments at outreach locations, home visits and onsite at the Centre;
  • Initiating and providing community education and training to seniors and service providers; and
  • Establishing and maintaining the Centre’s links with relevant networks and organisations.

The successful applicant will be a passionate and self-motivated Social Worker, preferably with a Bachelor of Social Work qualification however a candidate holding a bachelors of Social Science will also be considered. It will be an advantage, though not essential, to have experience working in the community services sector and/or with seniors affected by elder abuse / financial exploitation. You'll have strong interpersonal and negotiation skills, allowing you to work closely with the Seniors Service Lawyer, along with the ability to effectively manage your time and competing priorities.

Cairns Community Legal Centre needs a team player with a strong client service focus, and a commitment to advocate for and provide consultative support services for seniors in potentially vulnerable situations.

In return for your dedication and hard work, you will receive an attractive remuneration circa $55,000 to $75,000 pa gross, depending on skills and experience, plus 9% super. You will also benefit from time off in lieu and if you are eligible employee salary sacrifice options will be available to further increase your take-home pay as well!
