The objectives of the Corporation are to work with Governments and other organisations, to foster community development and undertake infrastructure and economic programs to address issues such as poverty, sickness, destitution, helplessness, distress, suffering and misfortune among Wanindilyakwa residents and communities on Groote Eylandt and Bickerton Island.
About the Region
The Groote Eylandt archipelago lies just off the coast of the spectacular world-famous Arnhem Land, on the western side of the Gulf of Carpentaria, and approx 600km south east of Darwin. The traditional owners are the Warnindilyakwa people, but are referred to by their language name Anindilyakwa. There are three Indigenous communities in the archipelago – Angurugu, Umbakumba and Milyakburra (Bickerton Island).
Bickerton Island is a beautiful and peaceful island community, welcoming to new faces, and just a ten minute flight from Groote Eylandt. Angurugu, is a dry community located beside the main airport. The community of Umbakumba is situated on the East side of the Island with breathtaking seaside views.
Alyangula is the main Township on Groote Eylandt, it is home to facilities such as a school, recreational club, a golf club and golf course, a pool, tennis and squash courts and locals take advantage of the sub-tropical lifestyle on their doorstep, with world class fishing spots and four wheel driving to recreational areas.
