About the Opportunity

Harbour City Ferries has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Controlling Officer (relief) to join their professional Operations team at Circular Quay on Sydney Harbour.  

This is a critical role within Harbour City Ferries, as you assume responsibility for coordinating the day-to-day operation of the entire Harbour-based fleet.

Reporting to the Service Planning & Delivery Manager, you will be directly responsible for coordinating the daily operational movements and management of all scheduled ferry services and routes in and around Sydney Harbour. You'll also ensure Passenger Services vessels are maintained to a required statutory level of operating and safety standards.

The role provides leave relief for the six (6) permanent Controlling Officers currently employed by Harbour City Ferries.  In addition, you'll provide leave coverage in the staff assignment area.  When working in the staff assignment area you will be responsible for the coverage of operational shifts on a day to day basis.  You will be in constant communication with our frontline crew and work in a high paced operationally critical environment.  Training will be provided in both areas of the business.

More specifically, some of your key duties will include:

  • Ensuring that vessels are available and reliable;
  • Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Assurance for all staff and passengers, through identifying any foreseeable hazard or safety issues in the workplace;
  • Ongoing revision of vessel availability in order to provide effective cover in an unexpected event, such as breakdowns, late running and poor weather;
  • Supplying information and direction to minimise the impacts on customers as a result of any service disruptions incidents;
  • Developing and implementing plans from specifications provided to facilitate all necessary operations;
  • Reviewing plans for vessel drills, along with initial and continuous training, whilst maintaining on time operation of timetabled services;
  • Allocating vessels to overnight berthings allowing for ease of availability for first runs the next day; and
  • Assisting with the preparation of reports and statistics for appropriate management on operational services.

This role calls for a proactive team player with proven analytical and decision making skills used to working in a high pressure environment and thinking on their feet.  The successful candidate will have significant experience in Logistics and Transport Controlling, through having previously worked in a transportation control room.

It would be a benefit to have sound knowledge of the Port of Sydney waterways, including the Parramatta River, and you should have an interest in maritime and fleet management. Along with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, you'll require a commitment to quality customer service for dealing with internal and external stakeholders.

To be successful you will need a demonstrated understanding of relevant legislation and statutory government regulations, along with a willingness to obtain a VHF Radio Licence if you don't already hold one. Demonstrated time management and planning skills are essential, as is the ability to solve problems in emergency situations. A current First Aid Certificate is also required.

You will need to be flexible, as this role involves shift work, along with weekend work and public holidays, to cover the year round, 21 hour operation of the Control Room.
