Brighton Council is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Environmental Health Officer to join our Regulatory Services team within Development Services.

This full-time role is based at the Council Chambers in Old Beach and plays an important part in supporting environmental and public health outcomes for the Brighton municipality through the effective administration of relevant legislation, by-laws and statutory requirements.

The Role: Reporting to the Manager Regulatory Services, this position provides specialist assistance across environmental and public health matters, including compliance, investigations, inspections, public enquiries, reporting and the coordination of key environmental health programs.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Undertaking environmental and public health duties, inspections and investigations to ensure compliance with relevant legislation, by-laws and statutory requirements.
  • Managing regulatory matters including complaints, littering, occupied caravans, pest and vermin control, onsite wastewater assessments and related public health issues.
  • Coordinating immunisation programs, water sampling requirements and associated reporting, records and Environmental Health databases.
  • Responding to public enquiries and complaints professionally, while liaising with Council staff, agencies, property owners, businesses and community stakeholders.

About You

You have completed an Advanced Diploma of Health Science (Environmental Health), or an equivalent degree approved by the Director of Public Health, bringing a minimum of three (3) years’ experience in a similar regulatory or environmental health environment.

You have demonstrated experience conducting investigations and applying relevant legislation, by-laws and regulations in a regulatory setting, including environmental health, public health, food, building, local government and pollution control matters.

You are highly organised, communicate clearly with a wide range of stakeholders, can prepare quality reports, correspondence and advice while managing competing priorities and meeting deadlines.

You bring sound problem-solving, negotiation and dispute resolution skills, with the ability to recommend practical solutions and follow up matters of non-compliance through direct negotiation, written notification and/or legal action where required.

You are confident working both autonomously and as part of a team, and hold, or have the capacity to obtain, the required licences and credentials including a current Working with Vulnerable Persons Card, unrestricted motor vehicle driver’s licence and White Card.

Position Details

  • Hours: Full-Time - A typical working week is Monday to Friday; 8.15am to 4.45pm (30 minutes lunch), i.e. 19-day month.  We can also provide flexibility by offering a 9-day fortnight with the successful candidate.
  • Salary: Professional Level 2: $96,989 to $107,206 per annum – to be negotiated with the successful candidate and will be dependent on qualifications and experience.  This position will also include a commuter-use vehicle and will attract a 15.5% superannuation entitlement.
