East Arnhem Shire is located in one of the most picturesque locations in Australia, where you can completely immerse yourself in the local Indigenous cultures and communities. Whilst the communities are remote, the ongoing support provided by Council means you are part of the bigger picture and your daily activities influence not only your Community, but the entire Shire.
About Angurugu, NT
Angurugu is a community located on Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory, just off the mainland and located about 650km east of Darwin. Beginning as an Anglican Church Mission Society station, Angurugu is now known for the manganese that was discovered nearby and currently produces over three million tonnes of manganese ore each year. Mining is a key industry of the island, however the Dugong Beach Resort and other culture based tourism businesses also help secure the island's economy.
Home to around 850, a large percentage (42%) of people living in Angurugu are under 20 years of age. This changing size and age composition of the indigenous population will increase the need for housing, employment opportunities, as well as aged care and health services.
