About the Organisation
The Carpentaria Land Council Aboriginal Corporation (CLCAC) was established over 25 years ago in Burketown to represent the rights and interests of Traditional Owners. They are the recognised native title service body for the southern Gulf region with members drawn from the nine language groups from that area.
In 2007 the Carpentaria Land Council Aboriginal Corporation (CLCAC) formally established a Land & Sea Management unit as an extension of its role as a native title service body. CLCAC’s Land and Sea program undertakes land and sea management activities that enhance the protection and management of natural resources in the southern Gulf of Carpentaria area for the long-term benefit of Traditional Owners groups and communities. Activities performed by the unit include Indigenous water policy and management; protection of cultural sites; development of an Indigenous Protected Area; and management of weeds, fire, feral animals; and dugong and marine turtles.
In 2011 the CLCAC established a Business and Economic Development Program. The program is building on current initiatives, like the Land and Sea Management Program and successful native title determinations, driving new economic development opportunities that will contribute to improved social and community development outcomes.
Carpentaria Land Council Aboriginal Corporation employees 33 staff across 3 locations, Normanton, Cairns and Burketown.
