About Gununamanda, and Mornington Island
Mornington Shire comprises 21 islands in the Gulf of Carpentaria. 14 islands are part of the North Wellesley group of islands, of which Mornington Island is the largest, estimated to be 700 square kilometers in area. The township, Gununa (with a population of approximately 1200), on Mornington Island, is serviced by regular passenger flights from Mt Isa and Cairns, and barge from Karumba.
The Wellesley Islands and surrounding seas are the traditional lands and waters of the Lardil, Yangkaal, Kaiadilt and Gangalidda peoples who have successfully managed their land and sea resources for millennia. The region remains one of the most pristine in Australia and is renowned nationally and internationally for its Indigenous art and culture, as well as its fishing. The land is covered by low scrub with ti-tree and swamp flats providing a habitat for many species of wildlife.
There are windswept beaches lined with sea-oak trees, rocky outcrops and mangroves. The surrounding sea is abundant with fish and marine life, such as turtle and dugong. The Lardil, Kaiadilt, Yangkaal and Gangalidda people manage a number of land and sea management projects aimed at maintaining the unique natural environment and supporting future generations to live off the land.
Gununamanda is a not-for-profit Indigenous organisation offering Mornington Island's only supermarket, general goods store and cafe.
About the Opportunity
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Couple to join Gununamanda. Specifically, the organisation is seeking a full-time cook with a partner who can assist with some of the cafe work (including cleaning), along with assisting with the supermarket and general goods store.
This is a 12-month contract position with potential to renew.
Working very independently in a brand new kitchen with great facilities, the successful couple will assist in the smooth and cost effective running of the overall operation. The cafe is sizable, with a $15K-$20K/week turnover.
The ideal couple will have a love for good food, along with great people skills. A hospitality/cook/chef qualification, and/or food handling certificates, are desirable but not essential.
We're looking for a couple with strong organisational skills who can work effectively as part of a small close knit team (approx 25 staff in the store), designing the menus, coordinating food orders/stock, and more!
It is preferable that you have experience working with, and living in, an Indigenous community.
Given the remote location, a couple who has worked in a similar environment will be highly regarded.
About the Benefits
Gununamanda truly value their staff. The successful candidates will join a dedicated team of people who are appreciated for their contributions.
This is a live-in opportunity offering base salaries of $46,000 per person + 9.25% super. A further range of benefits include:
- Couple Accommodation (specifically a 1 bedroom, fully-furnished house with all electricity paid for)
- Relocation assistance package up to $5,000 (negotiable)
- 5 weeks annual leave, plus 8 days isolation leave (after 6 months probation)
- Annual return airfare to your choice of Cairns, Townsville or Mt Isa (after 6 months probation)
- 10% discount on all groceries
This is an exciting offering for a couple with a passion for cooking and hospitality, looking for a new adventure. Perhaps you've run a cafe in the past and want a challenge, or maybe you're studying online and want a job that gives you the time to focus on both study and work?
