About the Opportunity

Currently, the Nunavut Arctic College is seeking a full time Senior Instructor for the Heavy-Equipment Operator Program to join the staff at the Kivalliq Campus in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut.

Reporting to the Director, Trades, Mining & Transportation, your main responsibility will be to provide educational leadership in related Equipment Operator programming and oversee all aspects in the delivery of trades programming that are based in the Kivalliq Region.

As part of our management team, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Instructing courses on site to provide intensive, high-quality education, while assisting others in the scheduling and implementation of community based training programs;
  • Designing, selecting, and evaluating courses and equipment operator programs, to ensure that training programs and courses are relevant and meet the needs of the students;
  • Planning and coordinating the delivery of Nunavut Arctic College, Territorial, Regional and Community based Pre-employment & Equipment Industry Accepted programs;
  • Monitoring and evaluating training activities to ensure the program and services meet established standards, including Apprenticeship Accreditation;
  • Providing administrative and contractual support to Nunavut Arctic College staff, and to the College’s Senior Management Team; and
  • Working closely with community groups, governments, and businesses (particularly with the Nunavut Apprenticeship, Occupational & Certification Board) to assist in the planning and successful delivery of Nunavut’s trades development and training.

To apply for this role, you will need the following qualifications:

A minimum of 5 years of Heavy Equipment Operator experience;
Experience teaching and supporting Heavy Equipment Operators as the certified Heavy Equipment Operator.

It would be considered an asset if you have:

  • 2-3 years’ experience teaching vocational-technical adult students;
  • Experience working in the North; and
  • A Certificate in either Explosive Activated Tools, WHMIS, and First Aid.

You will also join us with solid knowledge of computer programs such as word processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail and Internet programs.

Demonstrated strengths in organizing, planning and delivering instruction, supplemented with a strong background in oral and written communication skills is required. If you are accustomed to completing research, writing, and negotiating and have a strong aptitude for administrative matters, you will do well in this role.

As a professional with a true passion for the industry, you are driven to stay up-to-date with knowledge in the trade’s subject areas, in particular how the apprenticeship and related training programs are applicable to the industry.

The ideal candidate will have awareness of northern cultures, and fluency in one or more Inuit languages is desirable.
