About the Organisation

North Queensland Women's Legal Service (NQWLS) is a not-for-profit legal service funded by the state and federal governments. Operating for more than 18 years, they provide legal help for women, by women. The NQWLS seeks to enhance women's access to justice and to promote change within the justice system informed by women's experiences.

With a focus on family law, NQWLS provides help across a range of legal problems like divorce, separation, property settlements, family disputes, child protection, domestic violence, Victim's Assist and discrimination.

With offices in both Cairns and Townsville, NQWLS services a region that extends south to Sarina, west to the NT border and north to the Torres Strait.

About the Opportunity

NQWLS is seeking a motivated Family Law Solicitor to join their team in Townsville, QLD. This role is being offered on a Part-Time, 12 month contractual basis working 3-4 days per week (negotiable). There is the possibility of extension subject to funding.

Reporting to the Principal Solicitor, you will provide high quality legal services in the areas of family law and domestic violence.  In addition, you'll provide a Duty Lawyer service at the Townsville Magistrate's Court for Domestic Violence sittings (Wednesday mornings).

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing high quality legal services including legal information, referral and legal advice;
  • Assisting with casework in accordance with NQWLS' policies and guidelines;
  • Assisting with community legal education activities as required, and keeping abreast of any changes in relevant law;
  • Providing services at outreach clinics as required; and
  • Assisting the Principal Solicitor to identify and undertake suitable test cases.

To be considered, you must be eligible for admission as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland. Ideally, you will also have a minimum of 2 years post admission experience, preferably within a community legal setting working with women affected by domestic violence.  Importantly, you will have the demonstrated capacity to provide quality legal advice and casework in the areas of family law and domestic violence.  

NQWLS is looking for solicitor who has knowledge and an understanding of the philosophy of community legal centres and is passionate about social justice and human rights issues that affect women in Australia.  Additionally, you'll have strong interpersonal communication skills which will ensure your ability to deal with women from diverse cultural, linguistic and educational backgrounds. 

You'll also be able to participate in research, undertake policy work and participate in the design and delivery of community legal education programs.  In addition, you will need the ability to work independently with minimal supervision as a member of a multidisciplinary team.

Intermediate computer literacy and a current driver's licence are essential to be considered.
