About headspace

 

headspace is a new initiative by the federal government to establish 'one stop shops' for youth and mental health. Focusing on early intervention and prevention, headspace sites will bring together community, government and private providers of mental health and youth services to provide a dynamic, multidisciplinary mental health service to young people aged 12 to 25.

 

headspace Central Australia is one of the newly funded headspace platforms. General Practice Network NT has been funded by the Department of Health and Aging to provide allied health services to headspace Central Australia.

 

About the Opportunity 

 

General Practice Network NT Ltd (GPNNT) / headspace Central Australia is seeking Intake and Assessment Workers to join their Alice Springs and Darwin teams.

 

These are full time roles (37.5 hours per week) on fixed-term contracts until 30 June 2009, with the possibility of extension.

 

Reporting to the Manager - headspace Central Australia, you will be responsible for conducting all initial intake and screening assessments for young people attending the service, and determining the appropriate service pathway or referral.

 

Some of your specific responsibilities will include:

 

  • Conducting youth-focused psychosocial assessments to ascertain social, emotional and mental health needs;
  • Providing a rapid response and triage / brief assessment to young people and/or families and/or carers;
  • Working collaboratively with young people, their families or carers and other headspace team members to determine care or service needs, and assisting with the coordination of care/service needs as required;
  • Liaising and developing relationships with key link agencies;
  • Providing appropriate and timely referrals for a range of treatments and services;
  • Providing information to young people regarding the nature of mental health and substance use problems;
  • Advocating on behalf of young people whose care needs are being coordinated by headspace; and
  • Participating in ongoing planning, development and implementation of headspace Central Australia's clinical services.

 

Suitable applicants will possess relevant tertiary qualifications in social work, psychology or related health sciences, as well as current registration and authorisation to practice with the appropriate state registration board, and/or membership of a professional body.

 

To be successful in these roles, candidates will have:

 

  • A knowledge of and sensitivity to mental health issues affecting young people, best practice treatment options and support services;
  • An understanding of key issues in comprehensive primary health care, particularly in relation to the health and wellbeing needs of young people with mental health and/or substance use probems;
  • The ability to coordinate care for young people experiencing mental health or substance use problems;
  • The ability to work holistically with young people with mental health issues including Indigenous, refugee, and within low socio-economic backgrounds; and
  • The capability of developing and maintaining links and networking with a range of government, community and corporate stakeholders.

 

These positions require effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to contribute effectively within a multidisciplinary team.

 

Experience in working with interpreters and/or second language speakers, as well as experience in intake and assessment work in youth mental health and/or alcohol and other drugs in the Northern Territory would be held in high regard, but is not essential.

 

You will require a current driver's licence or the ability to obtain one.

 

These are pivotal roles within a multidisciplinary team. You will be rewarded for your hard work and commitment with fantastic remuneration circa $61,706 - 74,810 p.a., along with generous salary packaging options.
