Nunkuwarrin Yunti is the foremost Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation in Adelaide, South Australia, providing a range of health care and community support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

First incorporated in 1971, Nunkuwarrin Yunti has grown from a welfare agency with three employees to a multi-faceted organisation with around 100 staff who deliver a diverse range of health care and community support services.

Nunkuwarrin Yunti is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service, managed by an all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Board whose members are chosen by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

About the Opportunity

Nunkuwarrin Yunti has an exciting full-time opportunity for a dedicated and enthusiastic Counsellor/Narrative Therapist - Harm Minimisation based in Adelaide with outreach to other service locations.

This crucial role requires you to be responsible for the reduction of AOD related harms to individuals and their families by conducting assessments and providing a range of counselling interventions to assist clients and their family members to change harmful behaviours. You will increase their capacity to effectively manage the problems they are experiencing associated with AOD use and promote recovery.

You will also be committed to harm minimisation services and practices which encompass a balance between harm reduction (e.g. needle and syringe programs) and demand reduction (e.g treatment and other services intended to assist individuals to reduce and/or cease substance use). This role will provide support, counselling and education to clients referred through the Primary Health Network, peer agencies, Nunkuwarrin Yunti or other sources of referral. 

Some of your key responsibilities will include, but may not be limited to:

  • Providing high-quality assessments, counselling and support to those with complex needs;
  • Operating within diverse therapeutic frameworks including counselling and group work;
  • Providing expert advice relating to alcohol and drug misuse to key internal and external stakeholders;
  • Encouraging clients to access a range of social health and welfare services;
  • Maintaining established networks with relevant organisations and community groups; and
  • Participating in program evaluation and associated activities. 

To be considered for this role you will hold a qualification in Narrative Therapy, Social Work, or related field. You will have demonstrated experience working effectively with clients who misuse drugs and alcohol and have the ability to operate autonomously. You will also hold registration with a relevant professional body.

Reporting to the Team Manager, you will have a strong understanding of therapeutic approaches and will encourage clients to access a range of social health and welfare services, which include other Nunkuwarrin Yunti programs and external agencies. A strong commitment to harm minimisation principles and an understanding of addictive behaviours is also essential to this role. 

Importantly, you'll have demonstrated experience in supporting Aboriginal individuals and families and will be driven to improve the health outcomes in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. A strong understanding and knowledge of Aboriginal societies and culture and the ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal people will be pivotal to success in this role.
