About the Organization
Created in 2008 and privately held, Harmac Pacific Pulp operates a Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft pulp mill on the east coast of Vancouver Island near Nanaimo, BC. Nanaimo Forest Products (NFP) Ltd., the owner of the Harmac Pacific trademark, restarted the mill with a single production line on October 3, 2008. Since that time the mill has grown to two production lines and a capacity of 370,000 tonnes of world class pulp per year.
Key to the Harmac’s success is the employee ownership model. Our employees are very active participants in the running of the business and have 2 members that they appoint to the company’s 6 seats on its Board of Directors.
The future of Harmac Pacific Pulp is looking bright. Through extensive capital investments, the organization has made significant improvements to productivity and reliability. In addition, as of 2013, instillation has been complete of a 25 MW Green Energy turbo-generator which we currently use to sell power to BC Hydro.

About the Opportunity
Harmac has an exciting opportunity for a Maintenance Supervisor to join our 370,000 tonne per year pulp mill in Nanaimo, BC.
Reporting to the Maintenance Superintendent, you will provide supervision of the maintenance function for an Operations Area of the mill.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Ensuring a high standard for compliance of employees to safe work practices and legislated safety regulations and the safe operation and condition of equipment
- Directing the activities of the tradesmen in your areas of responsibility to carry out the necessary functions to maintain the plant
- Working closely with the Area Production Supervisor to develop preventative maintenance programs that support the reliable operation of the plant
- Utilizing the Maintenance Management System (Dynamics) to process work orders and requisitions to carry out all maintenance activities. Support your crew in the adoption and implementation of the System
- Ensuring proper orientation and training for all crew members under your direction and maintain records of employee qualifications
- Maintaining high standards for your crew in the areas of; safety, housekeeping, and compliance with safety & maintenance procedures
- Recording and maintain timekeeping records for employees under your direction in accordance with the provisions of the Labour Agreement
- Dealing with complaints and grievances brought forward by members of the crew in a fair and consistent manner guided by the Labour Agreement and Mill Policies
- Identifying opportunities to improve the effectiveness of the Operation and make recommendations to the General Maintenance Superintendent and Area Production Supervisor
- Carrying out projects and administrative activities to support the objectives set out by the Maintenance Department.
Our ideal candidate will have a Mechanical Trades Qualification, a Mechanical Technology Diploma, or related Engineering qualifications. You will also have significant experience in the maintenance of Pulp process equipment and demonstrated supervisory and leadership abilities.
You will also demonstrate:
- The ability to work cooperatively with people to achieve results
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Experience in developing job procedures and training systems
- Working knowledge of desktop computer software applications
- The ability to work effectively in a team environment
- The ability to demonstrate initiative and deal with multiple demands
