A corporate team of housing professionals works diligently to make the Nunavut Housing Corporation (NHC) an action-oriented service delivery agency. Our key strength lies in our collective passion and ability to deliver targeted housing solutions to all. These include: 

  • Education, training, and support to Local Housing Organizations in the areas of administration, finance, program delivery and technical construction techniques and procedures;
  • Homeowner services in the areas of finance, life skills and technical assistance; Property management services to Government employees in Government Staff Housing; and
  • The coordination of housing-related lobby efforts on behalf of all residents of Nunavut (Nunavummiut).

About the Opportunity

The Nunavut Housing Corporation (NHC) currently has an exciting opportunity for a Maintenance Manager to join our team in Qikiqtaaluk. 

Reporting to the Housing Manager, the Maintenance Manager will be responsible for the efficient and effective use of the Housing Association's/Authority's resources, including funds, in the fulfilment of the Housing Association's/Authority's mandate. 

You will also be responsible for recording and analyzing the efforts, and making necessary changes and adjustments to the services provided by managing staff performance. You will also be required to supervise contractors and administer contracts in the performance of these duties.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Identifying preventative maintenance requirements
  • Developing an annual work plan for maintenance services
  • Receiving and reviewing repair requests
  • Producing and issuing work orders to the Foreman outlining maintenance to be performed
  • Conducting semi-annual inspections of buildings and works to review the standard of maintenance being provided, adherence to the plan, identifying problem areas, and revising the plan as needed
  • Ensuring annual condition ratings are completed
  • Providing supervisory direction and expertise to staff and supervisor
  • Planning and administering the execution of minor O&M funded projects 
  • Monitor client capital  projects
  • Estimating costs of specific maintenance projects as requested 
  • Managing human resource functions in relation to members of your team
  • Other related duties as required

To qualify for this role, you will have:  

  • A valid Journeyman’s Red Seal ticket in carpentry, plumbing, oil burner mechanic, electrician or housing maintenance serviceman
  • 5 or more years of experience in supervising employees
  • Extensive knowledge of residential building components and all of the various trades
  • Good computer skills, and the ability to write and analyze reports
  • A current class 5 driver’s license.
  • The willingness and ability to pass a criminal record check

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong problem-solving and time management skills. The ability to coordinate many activities simultaneously and to track the progress of all of the activities is crucial. Similarly, you will need to be able to estimate and cost-out materials, labour, and other expenses for projects and to budget all activities within the maintenance department.

Due to the nature of this role, a strong knowledge and understanding of the applicable codes, including the National Building Code, National Plumbing Code, and the National Fire Code are required.

Finally, you must be self-motivated and have the ability to work effectively as part of a team and individually. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official language is an asset, as is knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture and lands.
