About the Opportunity 

Methanex is currently seeking an Instrument/Electrical (I/E) Project Coordinator to join the team in Medicine Hat on a full-time basis.

As an integral and collaborative member of the Technical team, you will work within codes of practice and engineering guidelines to coordinate alterations and upgrades to the instrumentation and electrical systems of the Medicine Hat site.

You will be responsible for coordinating and facilitating alterations and upgrades through the design stages of research, estimating detailed engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and project closeout. 

Key accountabilities include: 

  • Designing control systems that improve reliability, safety, and performance of site equipment
  • Executing detailed, internal instrument and electrical projects, including the provision of support for justification, specifying and evaluating equipment, programming equipment, overseeing installation, assisting with commissioning, and generating operating procedures
  • Specifically, designing and modifying new and existing Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and the input/output (I/O) required for process control
  • Sizing, selecting, procuring, and supervising installation and commissioning of new and upgraded application specific equipment
  • Coordinating construction tasks and maintaining schedules to ensure successful completion of deliverables
  • Ensuring projects are completed utilizing the Management of Change procedure
  • Providing support to the Maintenance and Operations teams, including troubleshooting instrument and electrical issues, supporting plant shutdown and start-up, and completing technical document control functions
  • Maintaining instrument and electrical databases, and ensuring instrument specifications remain current
  • Supporting the supervision of out-sourced engineering and construction contractors related to instrument and electrical modifications and upgrades
  • Participating as a member of the site reliability team, as well as in hazard analysis studies as required
  • Acting as the site’s designated legislative compliance contact person with responsibility for ensuring Canadian Electrical Code, International Society of Automation (ISA) Standards, and Alberta Boiler Safety Association (ABSA) requirements related to the areas of instrument and electrical are compliant on site, and further that changes or updates to legislation, standards, and requirements are appropriately communicated to site stakeholders

To qualify for this role, you will have an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering with Controls option, or a post-secondary diploma in Instrumentation Engineering Technology, accompanied by Registration with APEGA as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or with ASET as a Certified Engineering Technologist (CET), or eligibility to obtain the designation. You will also have five years of experience in project management and controls technology.

In addition, you will also demonstrate: 

  • Proficiency in electrical controls systems, including motor control, distribution and the Canadian Electric Code (CEC), as well as International Society of Automation (ISA) symbology and piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID) drawing standards
  • Excellent working knowledge of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Distributed Control Systems (DCS), and input/output (I/O) makeup, logic software, configurations and communications
  • Experience in equipment sizing and capabilities determination
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of programs, particularly Word, Excel, and Outlook, as well as web-based applications
