About the Organization

Since 1979, The Legal Services Society (LSS) has been the provider of legal aid in British Columbia. As a non-profit organization, our goal is to provide legal information, advice, and representation services to some of BC's most vulnerable and marginalized citizens: those who do not have the financial, educational, social or health resources to effectively access the justice system when their families, freedom, or safety are at risk. Many of our services are also available to all British Columbians and our scope of work includes family law, child protection, immigration, and criminal law.

About the Opportunity

LSS currently has an exciting career opportunity for a Senior Business Intelligence Analyst to join our team in Vancouver, British Columbia.

In this pivotal leadership role, you will lead, supervise and coordinate the business intelligence program at LSS and undertake complex reporting. 

More specifically, you will lead the development of business intelligence vision, strategies and standards and recommend appropriate BI models, tools, and procedures in accordance with industry standards and best practices. You will also deliver business intelligence tools and analysis to inform LSS decision-making and development and implementation of LSS business strategy.

Key accountabilities include, but aren't limited to:

  • Leading and participating in the governance of LSS data and other data initiatives, including implementing governance standards, data definitions, and data modelling, in collaboration with data users and stewards, monitoring, test, and verify data for accuracy and reliability, detecting, and reporting on problems, as well as initiating follow-up procedures to maintain data quality (as required)
  • Coordinating training and education of users on BI tools and practices, including increasing users’ understanding of the content, relationships, structure, integrity, and consistency of LSS data, and increasing overall organizational data literacy
  • Providing complex ad hoc reporting, including predictive modeling, to support strategic and operational decision-making on matters such as implications of proposed legislation, services changes, trends, and demand for services
  • Analyzing, interpreting, summarizing, and assessing a variety of information and make recommendations related to the planning and operations of LSS
  • Structuring and presenting data to users in clear and appealing ways that enable users to understand and manipulate the data to answer key “what if” business questions
  • Interviewing users in the definition, analysis, feasibility, and design of business intelligence requirements, providing alternatives, and recommending solutions
  • Coordinating the development of and provide access to key indicators to track LSS costs, demand for service, and operational performance
  • Administering and assisting in maintenance and augmentation of the LSS data warehouse, as well as administering Microstrategy implementation and architecture
  • Monitoring and assessing LSS BI systems to ensure they continue to meet LSS needs
  • Performing supervisory duties such as providing day to day technical guidance and assisting staff to obtain the necessary resources and professional development
  • Planning, assigning, reviewing, monitoring, and evaluating day-to-day work of staff and be responsible for the day-to-day supervision of staff including attendance management, overtime/training request approvals, scheduling, progressive discipline, and step one grievance response
  • Participating in the hiring, training, orientation, and development of staff, completing performance and evaluation plans, and conducting performance reviews

You will also be required to collaborate with IT in identifying solutions and delivering information services to LSS, and also liaise with internal and external contacts. You will also conduct special analyses, deliver presentations, and participate in committee work as required.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate for this role will have a Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Computer or Data Sciences, Commerce, Business Administration, or a related discipline and a minimum of 5 years of business intelligence/reporting experience plus a minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. 

You will also have advanced working knowledge of business intelligence front-end database reporting tools like Microstrategy, Tableau, QlikView, Microsoft BI (SQL Server Analysis Services, Power BI, Power Pivot, Excel), Oracle. Similarly, a strong understanding of ETL tools like SQL Server Integration Services, Informatica is required, as is expert proficiency with Microsoft Excel. 

You will also possess:

  • Knowledge of business intelligence best practices and strategies, standards, models, tools, and procedures
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of project management
  • The ability to write complex queries and use business intelligence software to create reports, cubes, and dashboards
  • The ability to structure and present complex data in clear and visually appealing ways using Excel and other tools
  • Strong supervisory, management, leadership skills in leading, coaching and directing staff
  • The ability to supervise, train, plan, schedule and evaluate the work of staff
  • The ability to design and maintain Extract Transform and Load processes
  • The ability to research collect, organize, and analyze data, and report on financial and statistical information
  • The ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and to present complex data and analysis in clear, non-technical language
  • Considerable knowledge of contemporary business requirements elicitation and analysis and the ability to apply them to existing and new BI tools and reporting
  • Working experience with Microstrategy

Above all, you will have exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple competing demands and work across all levels of the organization. As a natural strategist, you enjoy using this skill in the decision-making process.
