About the Organisation
Burke Shire sits at the base of the Gulf of Carpentaria, nestled alongside the Northern Territory Border. Home to approx. 550 people, the Shire is administered out of Burketown, approximately 400 Km north of Mount Isa. The Shire boasts many world class natural attractions (including Riversleigh fossil fields and Boodjamulla National Park) an abundance of wildlife, barramundi and crocodiles.
To build upon the region’s potential, Council is establishing a shared services accounting bureau in Cairns. The Bureau will provide accountancy services to Burke Shire and Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire Councils, and potentially, over time, to other remote local governments.
About the Opportunity
To resource its Accounting Bureau, Council is seeking to appoint two (2) Senior Accountants. The positions will be based in Cairns. Both positions will be offered full-time, under a 3-5 year renewable contract basis.
The positions will report to the Executive Manager Finance, and will oversee Councils’ financial systems. The positions will provide effective and efficient accounting support to both Councils, including the preparation of management reports, annual general purpose financial statements, budgets and long term financial forecasts.
Key accountabilities include:
- Ensuring the general ledgers remains adaptive to organisational needs, reconciled and in balance;
- Actively assist the Executive Manager Finance with the preparation of annual budgets, financial statements and long term financial forecasts;
- Assist with external and internal audit;
- Undertake revenue, expense and asset life-cycle modelling; and
- Provide financial training and mentoring to Council employees.
Please Note: Travel to Burketown and Doomadgee is a requirement of these position. You will need to be able to travel in a light aircraft and be away from home for periods of up to 2 weeks at a time.
About You
To be considered for one of these roles, you will hold tertiary qualifications in Accounting and hold CA / CPA certification. Previous experience as a corporate or financial accountant will be a distinct advantage. Past experience in local government will be highly regarded, but not essential.
