Our Parks and Recreation team cares for over 65 hectares of parklands and green spaces, including the award-winning East Shores precinct, Gladstone Maria and Spinnaker Park – providing a vibrant, worldclass recreational environment for residents and visitors.
About the Role
As a Parklands Gardener, you will play a key role in maintaining and enhancing GPC’s parklands to a consistently high standard. You will contribute to the presentation, safety, and accessibility of these community spaces, ensuring they remain welcoming and enjoyable for all users.
This hands-on role involves a mix of gardening, landscaping, irrigation, and general maintenance activities, as well as interaction with members of the public.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
- Maintain and enhance GPC parklands, gardens and facilities across sites including East Shores and Gladstone Marina
- Undertake horticultural activities such as planting, pruning, mulching, fertilising, and garden bed maintenance
- Identify and manage weeds, pests and plant health issues
- Install, maintain and troubleshoot irrigation systems
- Operate and maintain plant and equipment including ride-on mowers and power tools
- Perform general cleaning of parklands including paths, boardwalks, BBQ facilities and public areas
- Plan and prioritise daily, weekly and monthly maintenance activities
- Contribute to landscaping and improvement projects, including site preparation and planting
- Carry out routine inspections and operational checks, including water park facilities
- Record maintenance activities and utilise electronic management systems
- Support continuous improvement of horticultural practices and presentation standards
- Positively represent GPC when interacting with park users, contractors and the community
What you’ll Bring
- Experience in horticulture, landscaping or park maintenance
- A strong understanding of plant care, cultivation and maintenance practices
- Knowledge of irrigation systems, including installation and maintenance
- The ability to use tools, equipment and machinery safely and effectively
- A proactive approach to safety, quality and continuous improvement
- Sound judgement and the ability to prioritise and manage tasks across multiple sites
- Good communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with colleagues and the public
- A willingness to learn, develop and contribute to a high-performing team
Qualifications and Requirements
Mandatory:
- Certificate III in Horticulture (or relevant equivalent experience)
- Provisional Driver’s Licence (minimum requirement)
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC)
