Join our supportive and professional Governance team in a leadership role that is key to supporting good decision-making and community engagement across Baw Baw Shire Council.

In this role you will support the Mayor and Councillors, ensure the effective delivery of governance services, and oversee Council and Audit Committee meetings. Reporting to the Manager Governance, you’ll supervise a small team and be responsible for statutory compliance, Council delegations, policy management, and providing high-level governance advice on legal and operational matters.

About the Role

You will play a critical role in ensuring effective Governance practices across the organisation, ensuring internal staff are aware of Governance processes. In this role you will experience the vast range of services provided by Local Government and will have a strong understanding of the role of the Councillors in making decisions that impact these services and setting the strategic direction for the Baw Baw Shire area. 

Sitting within the broader Governance team, this role also works alongside Council’s property and risk teams. As part of a small, tight-knit business unit, you'll have the opportunity to build strong working relationships and develop a diverse range of skills. 

About the Successful Candidate

We're seeking a governance professional with relevant tertiary qualifications or extensive experience in a similar role, compliance or senior municipal administration.

You’ll bring strong communication skills, a sound understanding of local government legislation, and the ability to build effective relationships with Councillors, the CEO, and senior leaders.  You will have the ability to communicate complex policies, technical information, and statutory obligations clearly and effectively, in writing and orally. Local Government experience and familiarity with the Local Government Act 2020 are highly regarded.
