About the opportunity
In June 2025, Council is launching a new waste service that includes food and garden bins, marking the most significant change in our waste management approach in 30 years.
We are looking for experienced Contamination Management Officers to join our Waste Services team on a permanent, full-time basis. In this role, you will engage and educate our community about the new food and garden waste service.
Your responsibilities will include implementing initiatives to reduce contamination in the food and garden waste bins, ensuring alignment with Local Government policies and community needs.
Additionally, you will work with a variety of stakeholders—from local authorities to residents—to foster collaboration and improve resource recovery outcomes. A key focus of this role is on education and behaviour change strategies to minimize contamination in waste disposal practices.
Qualifications and experience
Essential:
- Minimum Cert IV qualifications in an environmental, educational discipline or related discipline.
- Relevant local government or industry experience
- Project and resource management experience, including demonstrated ability to deliver related projects within timeframes with reporting outcomes
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to engage and collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including local government authorities, waste management companies, community organizations, and residents
- Ability to build relationships, promote awareness, and address concerns effectively
- Ability to prioritise tasks, set goals, and ensure timely completion of milestones
- The confidence and ability to work independently and as a team member
- Demonstrated commitment to customer service and experience in communication with difficult clients in person and by telephone
- Demonstrated experience in oral and written communication skills
- Strong computer literacy
- Current NSW drivers’ licence (Class C).
Desirable:
- Experience in developing and implementing programs or initiatives, preferably in the context of waste management or environmental sustainability
- Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills to identify challenges, propose innovative solutions, and drive continuous improvement in relation to behaviour change related to waste management practices
- Availability to work flexible working hours.
Remuneration and benefits
The salary and conditions of employment are in accordance with Blacktown City Council’s Enterprise Agreement.
- Entry level for this position starts at $1,622.73 per week
- Leaseback Vehicle
- 35 hour working week
- Flex-time
- Allowances for audits conducted outside the ordinary span of hours
