About the opportunity

Blacktown City Council is experiencing a time of significant growth. This growth has led to an expansion of service delivery over recent years, that has previously been led by a very small legal team, supported to a high degree, by external law firms. Our legal section is poised for expansion with a restructure under way, that will better support the needs of Council and provide savings. Integral to the new structure, we are seeking to employ a suitably qualified individual to fill an exciting role that will be the key support to operations for the legal team.

This permanent, part-time position is akin to a private legal office manager role and will be responsible for coordinating core processes (e.g. matter triage) and court appearances to assist the lawyers, be the SME for legal matter systems, support the Executive Corporate Counsel to build new legal governance processes and policies, manage the precedent library, billing, and build reports, amongst other duties. 

Qualifications and experience

Essential:

  • Minimum Diploma in legal practice management or governance/ compliance or related field
  • Solid experience in the legal or governance fields
  • Demonstrated knowledge and intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and legal management systems (e.g. Leap, Lexis Affinity etc.)
  • Experience in use of legal search systems (e.g. Infotrack, Dyam Duram etc.)
  • Process management experience (proficiency in process management systems such as Nintex Promapp, highly regarded)
  • Experience supporting lawyers and solicitors, preparing lawyers for Court attendance (knowledge of appropriate Court protocol and legal proceedings highly regarded)
  • Exceptional organisational and prioritisation skills
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in maintaining legal privilege, privacy and confidentiality
  • Demonstrated commitment to and excellent service delivery to stakeholders and customers
  • Capable of building and maintaining effective relationships across all levels of the organisation, with all key stakeholders
  • High efficiency and accuracy in completion of tasks
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve successful outcomes within agreed timelines, while balancing competing priorities and stakeholder needs
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently or collaboratively and be a self-starter
  • Ability to take direction and willingness to learn
  • Ability to apply analytical and problem-solving skills to identify critical issues and develop innovative solutions, while ensuring compliance with legal and procedural requirements
  • Ability to anticipate and address needs and challenges as they arise, using reflective and strategic thinking
  • Excellent phone manner
  • Current class C driver’s licence valid in NSW
  • Police Check. 

Desirable:

  • Demonstrated project management experience, with a proven ability to handle multiple projects and deliver on time and within budget
  • Business acumen
  • Legal or conveyancing background and experience e.g. Property, Planning and Environmental law
  • Process management experience (proficiency in process management systems such as Nintex Promapp, highly regarded). 

Remuneration and benefits

The salary and conditions of employment are in accordance with Blacktown City Council’s Enterprise Agreement.

  • Entry level for this position starts at $1,867.95 per week, pro-rata to 21 hours per week
