About The Opportunity

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Leading Hand - Parks and Open Spaces to lead, oversee, and support Council’s infrastructure and Delivery. In this pivotal role, your responsibilities will include (but are not limited to): 

  • Lead a small team in the maintenance of, and to enhance the environment of our Parks, Gardens and Open Spaces, Cemeteries, Reserves, Beaches and Foreshores, and Streetscape as part of a multi-disciplined team.
  • Assists the supervisor in carrying out their duties including leading small teams to deliver maintenance activities, minor improvement projects, or specific tasks and completion of task/ project documentation. 
  • Daily completion of relevant paperwork and preparation and submission of basic reports. 
  • Performing a wide range of maintenance, repair and improvement activities collaboratively. 
  • A portion of this role is to operate and assist with supervision of the operation of one or several plant items including: Pneumatic tyred tractor with powered attachments up to 110 KW (includes tractor slashers,) assorted mowers and assorted small plants equipment. 
  • It is expected that the incumbent undertakes other reasonable duties and tasks requested by Management within the incumbents capabilities, including additional duties as required during periods of absence of other staff. 
  • Ensure workplace procedures are kept up to date and amended.  

About You

Mandatory:

  • Experience in the supervision of small crews or minor projects
  • Qualifications for operating vehicles and relevant item/s of plant; including possession of current competency. 
  • Driver’s License Class ‘C’ and MR License (or can obtain shortly after).
  • Experience in the operation and basic maintenance of relevant item/s of plant. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team environment ensuring that outcomes are achieved. 
  • Possession of a current Construction Industry General Safety Induction. 
  • Demonstrated experience in Parks Environment, Landscape and Horticultural activities; that may include labouring, gardening, cleaning, maintenance and repair, maintaining and pruning vegetation, grass and turf management, herbicide application, playscape maintenance, traffic control and signage set-out on public roads. 
  • A sound knowledge of/or the ability to acquire sound knowledge of Part 3 of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices. 
  • High level verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills.

  • HR Licence 
  • Herbicide Operator Ticket (AC/DC) 
  • Chainsaw Ticket 
  • MUTCD
  • Certificate II or higher in a Horticultural related field
