About the role
Reporting to the Finance Manager, the Finance Officer Accounts Receivable is responsible for controlling the Hospital’s billing, invoicing, and collections processes to ensure timely and accurate revenue reporting. This role requires working closely with patients, Health Funds and Hospital departments to resolve outstanding accounts while maintaining compliance with Hospital policies and healthcare regulations. The Finance Officer Accounts Receivable is a key contributor to the Finance team, pivotal to the functioning of Burnside Hospital, supporting the achievement of its purpose, values and business objectives. This is a permanent full-time opportunity based at our Stepney site.
Key responsibilities include:
- Follow up outstanding Sundry Debtors (both patient and non-patient related), ensure timely collection of payments and monitor organisational benchmarks.
- Investigate and resolve claim rejections or discrepancies in collaboration with relevant departments.
- Process patient and Health Fund refunds.
- Prepare quotes for self-insured patients.
- Maintain Tenants and Health Fund Registers.
- Ensure that the patient management system is updated with regular changes into Health Fund contract rates “i-Assist”.
- Reconcile Accounts Receivable control accounts and ageing reports and maintain accurate and up-to-date records of accounts receivable transactions.
- Proactively work with internal and external stakeholders to achieve deadlines.
- Prepare and monitor benchmark reporting for patients’ invoices.
- Assist in comparing and reviewing Health Fund contract rates.
- Identify and develop initiatives to ensure automation and continuous improvement in system and processes.
- Ensure that the billings are done regularly and monitor the turnaround time for billings.
- Assist Billing Officers with data entry and invoice processing in a timely manner to achieve deadlines and improve turnaround time for billing of invoices.
- Backfill the Billing Officer and Senior Finance Officer duties when needed.
- Work closely with various departments to smooth overall billing, refund and write off processes
- Assist in annual financial audits by providing necessary documentation.
- Ensure billing and collection processes comply with Hospital policies and healthcare regulations.
- Provide other general administrative/finance support as required.

About you
You will enjoy engaging and communicating with internal and external stakeholders while applying your keen attention to detail and analytical and technical skills in a way that helps the department achieve its financial and administrative goals.
This position requires an individual who has:
- Proven experience in analysing transactional data and making recommendations to decision makers.
- General knowledge of the Patient Management System and Financial Information systems.
- Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders in person and by telephone.
- Strong organisational and time management skills, attention to detail, and a competent problem solver, able to prioritise own work to meet deadlines and enable quick and accurate issue resolution.
- Proficiency in Microsoft applications including Excel, and advanced numeracy skills.
- Innovative mindset with ability to review and analyse situations, procedures and systems, and recommend and implement changes and improvements where necessary.
- Ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively in a team.
