About the role
Reporting to the Reception Eligibility Manager, the Receptionist contributes to the wider Burnside Hospital Administration team, and is pivotal in providing and supporting secure, reliable, efficient, and fit for purpose administrative solutions to meet the Hospital’s operational objectives and facilitate a positive patient experience through the Hospital. This role requires engaging with patients, visitors, hospital staff, professionals and service providers to support the provision of Burnside Hospital’s purpose, to provide exceptional care, always. This is a permanent part-time opportunity (0.4 FTE) based at our Toorak Gardens site, and operates on a 7-day roster basis, afternoon, evening and weekend shifts.
Key responsibilities include:
- Support the pre-admission, admission and discharge of patients, obtaining accurate information necessary for completion of accounts, medical and statistical records
- Collect Health Fund excess payments and account payments details
- Assist patients, volunteers and visitors as required with non-medical enquiries
- Operate Hospital Communication System during hours required
- Ensure confidentiality of patients, volunteers and staff at all times
- Prepare daily reports for financial and statistical reporting
- Prepare and maintain patient notes for admission
- Maintain accurate records of incoming patients details to health funds and process letters, advising patients of financial responsibility
- Balance cash register on completion of shift and process receipts via computer
- Reconcile cash register and settle EFTPOS at the end of each shift
- Provide quality patient-centered services to ensure patient satisfaction at all times
- Ensure the accuracy, integrity and privacy of patient information
- Maintain a physically safe and culturally sensitive clinical environment for all patients, their families and staff

About you
You will enjoy engaging and communicating with patients, visitors, hospital staff, and clinical and management professionals while applying your customer experience and administrative skills in a way that helps Burnside Hospital achieve its operational and administrative goals.
This position requires an individual who:
- Has demonstrated experience working in a hospital based clinic or theatre bookings area.
- Holds or is working towards formal relevant qualifications.
- Commits to a patient-focused approach in service provision.
- Has exceptional communication skills with well-developed written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
- Is proficient in Microsoft applications and hospital database systems, and has well-developed word processing skills.
- Demonstrates ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively in a team.
- Demonstrates ability to multitask, self-prioritise and to work to a deadline.
- Is flexible and proactive in their approach to work, with a positive ‘can do’ attitude.
- Possesses strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and problem-solving ability.
- Commits to learning and development to expand current knowledge and expertise relevant to this role.
- Is willing to embrace and demonstrate the values of Burnside Hospital.
- Maintains the highest ethical standards and treats all hospital and patient matters with confidentiality and respect.
- Displays the highest levels of personal presentation and behaviour in the Hospital’s client-facing environments and contributes to harmonious working environment.
