Head of Human Resources

Job No: BHA28
Location: Flexible

Bush Heritage Australia (BHA) is a leading not-for-profit conservation organisation, protecting ecosystems and wildlife across the continent since 1991. Working in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, farmers and other land managers, our goal is to deepen and double our impact by 2030 – regenerating, protecting and restoring 30 million hectares of land for people, wildlife and future generations.

We’re looking for an experienced Human Resources leader to join our People, Safety & Culture (PSC) Team. This role will lead a high-performing national team responsible to deliver contemporary, values-aligned people practices that support our organisational goals, aligned with the Bush Heritage People Plan.

The role

Reporting directly to the Executive Manager, People, Safety and Culture, you will:

  • Lead and develop the People and Culture team to deliver the Bush Heritage People Plan through contemporary, values-aligned people practices across a geographically dispersed and hybrid workforce.
  • Partner with the executive, managers and employees to provide trusted advice and practical support on people and culture matters.
  • Oversee core people practices and systems, including workforce planning, recruitment and onboarding, performance and development, organisational capability, employee engagement, reward and recognition, and our industry-leading Seeding the Future intern program.
  • Embed diversity, equity and inclusion practices that foster a culture where people feel valued, included and empowered to do great work together.
  • Ensure effective governance, legislative and regulatory compliance, reporting and risk management across people and culture activities including payroll, remuneration, workers compensation and employee relations.
  • Drive continuous improvement and innovation of people systems, processes and employee experience, using data and insights to inform decision-making, and leveraging the opportunities presented by Artificial Intelligence.
  • Manage prioritisation, resource allocation (including budget) and escalation of people matters to ensure consistent and effective day-to-day service delivery while taking an agile and flexible approach.

About you

You are an experienced, tertiary qualified Human Resources leader with demonstrated experience leading a team to deliver high-quality, values-aligned, agile and flexible people services. You bring:

  • Significant knowledge and practical experience across core people practices, including talent management, performance and development, learning and organisational capability, culture and engagement, and employee relations.
  • Strong partnering and influencing skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships with executives, managers and employees.
  • Highly developed communication skills, with the ability to provide clear, pragmatic advice and manage complex or sensitive people matters.
  • Proven understanding of workplace relations, employment legislation, governance and compliance requirements in an Australian context.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, with experience fostering inclusive and respectful workplace cultures.
  • Experience improving people systems, processes and employee experience, using data and insights to drive continuous improvement and innovation, including leveraging Artificial Intelligence.

What we offer

  • A leadership role with national scope and impact
  • A supportive, inclusive and values-driven culture
  • Flexible location and working arrangements
  • The opportunity to make a lasting contribution to people, culture, and conservation outcomes in Australia
