ABOUT THE ROLE
We’re seeking a proactive and technically driven Project Engineer – Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) to join our Projects team. While the role can be based out of our regional offices in Townsville, Rockhampton, or Bowen, it also requires a consistent on-site presence to support the design development, implementation, and quality assurance of E&I works across the Carmichael Mine, Bravus Rail Network, and associated infrastructure.
As the Project Engineer, you’ll play a key role in bridging the gap between design and construction—working closely with contractor engineers to ensure effective execution, adherence to engineering standards, and delivery of quality outcomes on the ground. You’ll be instrumental in managing implementation activities, resolving technical issues in real-time, and maintaining accurate as-built documentation.
The role also offers opportunities to contribute to commissioning and system performance verification, making it ideal for an engineer who thrives in a fast-paced project environment and is passionate about delivering technical excellence from design through to execution.
Responsibilities of the role include:
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define project scopes, objectives, and deliverables for E&I projects aligned with operational and strategic goals.
- Conduct site investigations, feasibility studies, and engineering assessments, ensuring compliance with standards and regulations.
- Prepare or review detailed E&I designs, drawings, and specifications. Coordinate across disciplines for design optimisation and evaluate contractor/supplier submissions for compliance.
- Coordinate approvals with stakeholders, consultants, contractors, and regulatory bodies.
- Contribute to the development and standardisation of engineering specifications and documentation.
- Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources, ensuring on-time delivery with minimal disruption.
- Review contractor quality plans and ensure works meet technical and performance standards. Support QA processes (RFIs, TQs, ITPs, punch lists) and manage as-built records for handover.
- Oversee construction activities and conduct site inspections to ensure design and safety compliance.
- Provide technical support to construction, operations, and maintenance teams during build, startup, and operation.
- Maintain project documentation, report on progress, issues, and lessons learned.
- Keep up to date with industry trends and innovations to enhance project delivery.
Requirements of the Role:
Our people are dynamic, passionate, solutions-focused and diverse. We offer a dynamic and supportive workplace along with competitive remuneration.
The successful applicant will align with our values of courage, trust and commitment along with being dedicated to high standards. A flexible attitude to work will be required to meet project deadlines.
Other qualifications and attributes required include:
Necessary:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical or control system engineering
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in related engineering design, construction and delivery in multi-disciplinary projects
- Proven track record of successfully managing complex projects from conception to completion, within budget and schedule, while maintaining high safety and quality standards
- Strong technical knowledge of electrical and control system systems, standards, methodologies, equipment, and components commonly used in mining and rail operations
- Proficiency in project management software tools and Microsoft Office Suite
- SARC Safely Access the Rail Corridor (Nationally Accredited)
- RIW Card (Rail Industry Worker Identification)
- Standard 11 Coal Induction
Desired:
- Queensland Coal Mining and Rail industry experience
- Project Engineering experience gained within a mining, heavy haul rail or Infrastructure environment.
- Current Rail and Coal Board Medicals, Standard 11, S1, S2, S3 and SARC and RIW certification
- Professional registration (i.e.CPEng , RPEQ) would be highly regarded
