About the opportunity

Carpentaria Shire is located in the southeastern region of the Gulf of Carpentaria and covers an area of almost 65,000km2. About the Role:

We’re looking for a Technical Officer to join our Water/Wastewater team, a key role in supporting the day to day operations of the local plants, supplying and processing water for the residents and visitors of Normanton and Karumba. 

The role will be responsible for providing technical support to the Manager of Water and Waste, as well as the operational staff, to ensure the efficient and compliant operation and maintenance of all water and wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations and associated infrastructure.  It also works to develop, maintain and administer operational management plans and systems in compliance with Council and regulatory guidelines, practices and procedures, while overseeing procurement of supplies, project development and delivery as well as and formation and management of tenders, with a view to progress within the diverse water team, or engineering department within local Council.

 

About you

This position will ideally suit someone with proven capability in a water/wastewater environment, within local remote Councils or government departments, but offers entry-level opportunities for those who meet a number of other key skills and experience: 

  • Diploma or above qualifications in Engineering, Science, Chemistry,  or related discipline (highly desirable) 
  • Certificate III in Water Industry Operations (or ability to obtain)
  • Construction Induction Card (or ability to obtain)
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Mapinfo GIS or other related software
  • Project Management experience or qualifications (or ability to obtain) 
  • Forklift Licence (or ability to obtain)
  • Manual driver’s licence (Light Rigid beneficial, but not essential) 
  • Ability to perform hands-on, practical work 
  • Practical experience in/with water operational infrastructure and/or maintenance 
  • Ability to work with Operators, Tradesmen and Contractors to assist with plant operations
  • Willingness to learn from others and develop your knowledge, skills and career
  • Willingness to assist with after-hours work on an adhoc basis to cover staff absences
  • Experience working in a team and a hard-working attitude
  • High attention to detail
