Health and Safety Manager - CQ/NQ

Based in tropical Central Queensland, we are searching for a well-rounded and seasoned senior safety and health professional. You will join Cement Australia's largest site and flagship operation's leadership team in Gladstone, reporting directly to the site General Manager. This senior leadership role will provide strategic and tactical safety direction to the line leadership and general workforce, not only for our Gladstone site, but for our regional operations throughout Northern Queensland.

About the role:

The role will be a crucial part of the Gladstone site's senior leadership team. You will be the subject matter expert for Safety and Health onsite as well as the wider northern Queensland region. You will have ownership of the Safety and Health component of the site’s Safety, Health, Environment and Quality Management System (SHEQMS).

Other key components of the role include:

  • Maintain current understanding and company alignment of Safety and Health regulatory requirements and educate site stakeholders to ensure compliance
  • Ensure relevant training needs analyses are maintained for all Safety and Health related compliance training. Support Line Leadership training delivery
  • Foster a wider awareness and understanding of behavioral safety onsite
  • Support the internal/external Group Safety Audit Program
  • Develop programs that improve the awareness and capability of the operations around the identification of critical risks and controls and implementation of company-wide and local safe systems of work.
  • Liaise, under direction/guidance of Site Manager with Government and Industry bodies on health and safety issues or site regulatory requirements and constraints
  • Maintain clear and constant communication with direct and matrix managers with respect to operations priorities, risks, issues and opportunities
  • Provide coaching for line leadership in the work required to understand and implement the SHEQMS to the required standard including ongoing maintenance and improvement of the system
  • Management of health monitoring/health surveillance programs, as well as injury management and workers compensation elements
  • Partner with the Central Functions (People and Safety and Sustainability) in developing, implementing and maintaining employee health and wellness programs aligned to operational risks and current industry practices

About you:

To be considered for this role, you will be a leader in your safety and health field and have vast heavy industry experience as a senior Health & Safety professional, whilst demonstrating an outstanding level of business acumen. The ability to influence at all levels of the business, not just at site, is a key facet of this role. You will be dealing in every area of our business from the shop floor teams to the company CEO. Thus, the ability to relate to all levels of our business is a non-negotiable.

Other crucial components of your background will include:

  • Proven success in a similar role within a heavy industrial, transport, manufacturing or mining environment
  • Strong influencing, relationship building and negotiating skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Applied Science (preferred) and/or Masters level qualification in Health and Safety would be ideal, but not essential
  • Demonstrated results of site safety and wellness improvements
  • Understanding and interpretation of QLD Workplace Health and Safety and Workers Compensation Legislation
  • Experience in maintaining a management system certified to ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001
  • Understanding of budgeting and project management
  • Lead Auditor certification is desirable
  • Ability to influence safety and change at all levels within an organisation, not just at site
  • ICAM Lead Investigator or equivalent essential
  • Current drivers license and ability to undertake periodic travel by road and air
