Catholic Education Diocese of Rockhampton (CEDR) has developed an innovative Career Assistance Program (CAP) to mentor pre-service teachers in high quality education settings. The long-term vision of the CAP is to build the capacity and capability of classroom ready teachers through tailored, high calibre coaching and mentoring.

We are now calling for applications for the CAP, due to commence at the beginning of Term 1, 2026. 

Applicants will be:

  • In their third or fourth year of an undergraduate primary education degree or have commenced their master’s degree in Education (Primary) at any university across Australia.
  • Eligible to complete their course within the two-year period following commencement of the CAP. 
  • Due to complete their formal course of study in 2026 or 2027

About you

The successful applicant will have an understanding of, and a commitment to, the ethos of Catholic education. In addition, you will have well-developed interpersonal skills, a strong commitment to ongoing learning, and a willingness to listen to and act upon advice from your mentor

What we offer

  • Employed as a teacher assistant in a Catholic primary school (Level 3, hourly rate ranging from $34.19 - $35.64) for three days per week, for up to two years
  • Work under the direction and guidance of a high quality, expert mentor who will provide support through coaching and “at the elbow” training. Mentors will be fully registered teachers, eligible for accreditation at Highly Accomplished or Lead Teacher level.
  • Engage in relevant, supportive employment focused on training and development whilst maintaining full commitment to your Education studies
  • Access to professional development targeting areas such as classroom management, communicating with parents, designing learning sequences to meet student needs, assessment and reporting
  • Salary continues during practicum periods
  • Options to apply for OSHC/vacation care roles during school holiday periods. Any appointment to OSHC or vacation care would be additional, and remunerated separately, to the CAP.
  • Opportunities to apply for employment with CEDR at the successful completion of the CAP

 

Mandatory Requirements

  • A current valid Blue Card under the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000 (WWC Act) and valid Suitability Notice
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the role in a safe manner
  • Australian work rights

 

Selection Criteria

Listed below are the selection criteria. Please provide a response to each criterion.

Your response needs to be specific, citing examples that help us develop an understanding and knowledge of your skills and competencies. In total, the response to the selection criteria should be about 1000 words. 

In determining successful applicants for Career Assistance Program (CAP) positions, the selection panel will seek to appoint applicants who demonstrate the following:

  • Sound understanding of and commitment to the mission and vision of Catholic Education
  • Ability to work well individually and as part of a team
  • Readiness to learn and grow as a professional by seeking, listening to, and acting upon direction and advice
  • Capacity to develop professional relationships with peers, students and families
  • Willingness to participate actively in all aspects of school life
  • The interpersonal skills required of contemporary educators (for example: maturity, patience, organisation, tact, discretion, confidentiality, care, empathy)
