JOB SUMMARY:
Maintains lawns, shrubs, trees, playfields, parks and beaches
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintains civic lawns, garden areas, sports fields, public beaches and walking trails by grass cutting, fertilizing, weed control, pest control, marking field lines, edging and raking base paths, tree pruning and flower planting
- Maintains playground equipment including repairing chain links on swings, checking for hazards such as glass and needles, installing poles and painting
- Assist with the maintenance and servicing of City underground sprinkler systems
- Uses hand tools to clear snow and ice from parking areas and pedestrian walkways and carries out sanding and salting; spreads urea on airport runway for ice control
- Collects litter from campsite and litter barrels from parks, trails and recreation areas
- Cuts wood for City campgrounds
- Attends division safety talks, crew talks and required safety training; follows safe work procedures; reports hazards, injuries and near misses
- Operates equipment such as forklift, lawnmower, grass trimmer, hedge trimmer, rototiller, small hand and power tools
- Ensures for safe operation of equipment; performs light maintenance including lubrication, fluid checks and changing blades
- Operates City vehicles (Class 5)
- Maintains professional and technical requirements for the position
- Performs related duties as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School (Grade 12)
- Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver’s License
- Landscape Integrated Pest Management Certificate or Industrial Vegetation and Noxious Weed Pesticide Applicator Certificate
- Class 22 Radio Telephone Operator’s Restricted Certificate
- Airside Vehicle Operator Permit (AVOP)
- W.H.M.I.S. Certificate
- Traffic Control Person Certificate
- CSA Playground Safety Certificate
- Forklift Training
- Up to date knowledge of the City’s computerized systems, administrative systems and office technology as required
- Ability to approach work and relationships in a culturally sensitive and inclusive manner.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
- 1 year related experience
- Or an equivalent combination of experience and education
PAY RATE:
This is a union position with the current 2023 pay rate of $29.33 per hour as outlined in the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 798 Collective Agreement.
HOURS OF WORK:
Monday to Friday, 7:30 am – 4:00 pm, 8 hour day – 40 hour week
