JOB SUMMARY:
Assists in regulatory compliance of Powell River Airport and Powell Lake waterdrome; coordinates and participates in maintenance of airport grounds and City Aviation facilities; assumes duties of Airport Coordinator as required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conducts day-to-day airside and groundside operations in accordance with Federal regulations and YPW’s Safety Management Manual, Airport Operations Manual, Emergency Response Plan, Wildlife Management Plan, and Winter Maintenance Plan; includes runway, wildlife, and security checks and documentation.
- Conducts daily airfield inspections; includes, but not limited to, FOD removal and inspection of lighting, airfield contaminates, and wildlife.
- Participates in the YPW Safety Management System (SMS); includes assistance in comprehensive inspections, investigations, safety checks, audits and ensures compliance with safety programs and regulations.
- Participates in the YPW Emergency Response Plan (ERP); includes testing (annual exercises), alerting and activation of the plan, and fulfilling the role of on-scene controller (OSCR).
- Participates in the YPW Winter Maintenance Plan; includes airfield inspections, runway friction measurement, airport surface condition reports.
- Participates in the YPW Wildlife Management Plan (WMP); includes daily monitoring, mitigation, hazard awareness, and strike reporting.
- Perform basic maintenance, cleaning, and repairs of airport and waterdrome infrastructure and equipment – includes janitorial duties.
- Assists airport tenants, contractors, government agencies, City staff, airport users, and airport staff as required.
- Generates and manages accurate NOTAMs.
- Attends division safety talks, crew talks, and required safety training; follows safe work procedures; reports hazards, injuries and near misses.
- Operates City vehicles and equipment.
- Performs scheduled and unscheduled maintenance airside and groundside using heavy equipment, hand tools, and power tools; includes, but not limited to, snow removal and ice control chemical application, mowing, brush clearing, and fence repairs.
- Liases with appropriate City staff for snow and ice control purposes.
- Required to work outside of regular hours to deal with winter maintenance, airport projects, and emergencies.
- May be required to fulfill standby responsibilities on a rotating schedule.
- Maintains professional and technical requirements for the position.
- Performs duties of Airport Coordinator as required.
- Performs other duties as required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School (Grade 12)
- Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver’s License
- Airport Vehicle Operations Permit (AVOP-D)
- Restricted Operator Certificate–Aeronautical (ROC-A)
- Level 2 Incident Command (ICS-200)
- Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) for non-restricted firearms
- Chainsaw Operations training
- WHMIS certification
- Demonstrated ability to follow safety protocols and work in a regulatory environment
- Ability to approach work and relationships in a culturally sensitive and inclusive manner
- Up to date knowledge of the City’s computerized systems, administrative systems and office technology as required
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
- 1 year of experience in relevant equipment use
- Knowledge of airport operations
- Or an equivalent combination of experience and education
PAY RATE:
This is a union position with the 2025 pay rate of $35.27 per hour ($37.03 for 2026) as outlined in the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 798 Collective Agreement.
HOURS OF WORK:
Monday through Sunday, 5 am to 10 pm; up to 8 hours per day and up to 40 hours per week
Please note: This position is to provide extra capacity and to cover for absences such as sick and vacation relief. It requires availability for both short-notice and pre-scheduled work.
