JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for the guarding and care of persons detained at the RCMP Detachment pending hearing, return to parents, or transfer to correctional/penal institute. The incumbent completes various documents related to prisoners and ensures the cleanliness of jail cells and the guard room. The incumbent may be exposed to violent or hostile individuals and may be exposed to unpleasant working conditions, as well as various body fluids, in the course of their duties.  Performs related duties as required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Monitors and ensures safety of prisoners by way of physical checks and video monitoring
• Assists RCMP Officers in securing and searching prisoners
• Administers medication to prisoners
• Prepares and serves pre-packaged meals and performs related clean up
• Inspects cells before and after use
• Maintains prisoner log-book and other records
• Attends safety talks and required safety training; follows safe work procedures; reports hazards, injuries and near misses
• Maintains professional and technical requirements for the position
• Performs related duties as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• High School (Grade 12)
• RCMP Enhanced Reliability Security Clearance
• Occupational First Aid Level 1
• W.H.M.I.S. Certificate
• RCMP Guards Training
• Assessing Prisoner Responsiveness Training
• Annual workshop on RCMP Guard responsibilities
• Ability to approach work and relationships in a culturally sensitive and inclusive manner
• Up to date knowledge of RCMP specific computer applications, administrative systems and office technology as required

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

• 6 months of related experience
• Or an equivalent combination of experience and education

PAY RATE:

This is a union position with the current 2026 pay rate of $35.65 per hour as outlined in the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 798 Collective Agreement.

HOURS OF WORK:

Required to work shift work including weekends.

Please note: This position is to provide support to cover for absences such as sick and vacation relief and requires availability for both short-notice and pre-scheduled work. Varied schedule including daytime, evening and weekend shifts.
