JOB SUMMARY:
The General Labourer performs a range of operational maintenance functions that support City infrastructure through safe and reliable labour. The incumbent supports maintenance and construction work across municipal services, including site preparation, material handling, and cleanup. Duties may also include basic grounds upkeep and operational support tasks. May be used on occasion to fill in for vacancies in higher-level positions within the division, including but not limited to: Roads Maintainer, Utilities Labourer, and Treatment Plant Operator. This role promotes a safe, respectful workplace by following required safety procedures and training. The incumbent maintains required professional and technical qualifications, operates City vehicles and forklifts, uses small equipment and power tools safely, and completes related work as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Training:
High School (Grade 12). Valid BC Class 3 Driver’s License with Air Endorsement. W.H.M.I.S. Certificate. Traffic Control Person Certificate. Forklift Training.
Experience: One (1) year related experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Demonstrated ability to perform physically demanding work safely in all weather conditions while following instructions and working effectively as part of a crew. Ability to use a range of small equipment and hand and power tools and operate equipment such as forklifts in accordance with training, safe work procedures, and manufacturer requirements. Working knowledge of WorkSafeBC requirements and applicable legislation, including the ability to recognize hazards, use required personal protective equipment, follow safe work procedures, and report hazards, injuries and near misses promptly. Ability to communicate clearly, follow written and verbal directions, and complete basic documentation as required. Proven reliability, professionalism, and willingness to maintain professional and technical requirements for the position while supporting operational needs and performing related duties as assigned. Ability to approach work and relationships in a culturally sensitive and inclusive manner.
PAY RATE:
This is a union position with the current pay rate of $34.27 per hour as outlined in the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 798 Collective Agreement.
HOURS OF WORK:
Varied schedule may include daytime, evening, and weekend shifts. Most frequently hours occur
7:30 am – 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday, up to 8 hours per day, up to 40 hours per week.
