JOB SUMMARY:
The Fitness Instructor provides group fitness, weight training and specialty fitness instruction in support of safe and effective recreation services. The incumbent ensures program readiness and responds to participant inquiries, while supporting a positive and orderly fitness environment. Performs other related duties.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Training:
High School (Grade 12). Group Fitness Certificate from a recognized fitness organization. Current specialty fitness module relevant to assigned programming. Ten (10) continuing education credits in a fitness specialty area. Basic or Emergency First Aid. Current membership in, or eligibility for membership with, a recognized provincial, national or international fitness association.
This position is defined by the City of Powell River as a position of trust and requires a satisfactory Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Check as a condition of employment.
Experience: One (1) year of experience as a group fitness instructor.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service, along with effective communication and interpersonal skills. Working knowledge of group fitness instruction, exercise fundamentals and safe program delivery in a recreation setting, with the ability to coordinate class flow, support participants and complete program setup efficiently. Strong communication skills support clear verbal instruction, encouragement and respectful interaction with participants, staff and supervisors. Ability to adapt instruction, exercise options and pacing to support varied ages, abilities and program goals. Demonstrated awareness of facility rules, safe work procedures, emergency response expectations. Working knowledge of equipment use, room setup requirements and general cleaning practices related to fitness spaces and shared program areas. Demonstrated commitment to maintaining required certifications, pursuing continuing education and remaining current with recognized fitness standards and practices. Ability to organize work, prepare for classes and follow through on assigned tasks with reliability and care, while demonstrating professionalism, dependability and readiness to work cooperatively as part of a recreation team. Ability to approach work and relationships in a culturally sensitive and inclusive manner.
PAY RATE:
This is a union position with the current pay rate of $34.27 per hour as outlined in the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 798 Collective Agreement.
HOURS OF WORK:
Varied schedule including daytime, evening and weekend shifts
Please note: This position is to provide extra capacity and to cover for absences such as sick and vacation relief. It requires availability for both short-notice and pre-scheduled work.
