Our City Change project involves moving our employees from our Office in the Civic precinct to 12 Stewart Avenue, Newcastle West in October 2019. City of Newcastle (CN) is looking for an exceptional Program Manager to manage the day to day operations and aspects of CN’s City Events Program and develop policies and processes required to facilitate the program.
Reporting to the Manager Major Events and Corporate Affairs you will lead CN’s strategy to attract significant major events to the City, including the management of a Major Event Development Fund in excess of $250,000 annually.
This role will enhance and maintain the project management and governance framework for the Supercars Newcastle 500 Project, and other significant events in the City.
Your ability to develop a wide network of contacts across the industry both public and private will play an important role to build collaborative working relationships specifically for large scale events in the public domain.
Your comprehensive understanding of NSW Local Government and the functions and roles of NSW State Government agencies will contribute to the successful roll-out of event programs.

To be successful in this job you will need:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Commerce or a related qualification, and/or demonstrated capability through past employment experience.
- Formal Project Management qualifications or significant demonstrated experience delivering outcomes as a Program Manager.
- The ability to manage and coordinate a Project Management Team whose expertise is critical to delivering multiple major projects.
- Demonstrated experience managing a professional team across multiple disciplines to deliver operational aspects including financial, human resource and logistical arrangements, within planned budgets, scope, quality and time constraints.
- Demonstrated capacity to manage, monitor and evaluate a budget or experience in the development of budgets and service plans, monitoring and reporting of financial and work performance.
- Demonstrated experience in the completion of assigned tasks with minimal supervision, while meeting deadlines and within budget project delivery.
- Experience in licensing large scale events in the public domain in accordance with local government events protocol.
- Experience in conducting commercial events in the public domain.
- Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills, as well as sound influencing and stakeholder management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively with all levels of staff as well as proven ability to write professional, appropriate and accurate documentation, memos and reports.
- Experience in producing written communications including formal reports, policies, procedures and governance documents; correspondence to external customers; formal correspondence to government representatives and government bodies; and communications copy to assist marketing and delivery of events.
- Demonstrated commitment to foster a creative culture that supports excellence and direction setting, whilst building strategic relationships within CN to deliver programs of excellence.
- Proven ability to attract, develop and support staff from a diverse range of business backgrounds to ensure continuity of project delivery.
- Strong senior stakeholder engagement and influencing skills in a community and public benefit driven environment.
- Be willing and able to work in a dynamic and fluid environment with the flexibility to work outside regular business hours during the evening and on weekends.
- Any other accountabilities or duties as directed by Supervisor / Manager which are within the employee’s skills, competence and training.
- Ability to be agile and adaptable in a changing environment.
- Proven experience leading people through change.
Desirable
- A mix of local government and commercial experience.
- Current Class C driver's licence.
