A fantastic opportunity exists for a skilled and experienced public relations professional to lead City of Newcastle’s media presence.  

Reporting to the Media and Stakeholder Relations Manager as part of the Major Events and Corporate Affairs unit, you will build the City’s profile through engaging media opportunities and protect its reputation with astute issues management strategies.

Your ability to provide strategic advice, training and support to CN officers will play a critical role to increase media awareness and skills within the organisation.

The essentials you’ll need;

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing or a related qualification, and/or demonstrated capability through past employment experience.
  • Five (5) years or more experience working in a communications/public relations role which required developing and implementing media strategies and working with senior management to manage issues of reputational risk.
  • Extensive experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of communications strategies and activities, including media, publications, digital communications and social media.
  • Successful track record in delivering projects or parts of projects in accordance with financial, scope, quality and time constraints and demonstrated capacity to monitor and report on project performance.
  • Advanced level experience in media liaison, writing and editing.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills demonstrated by abilities in consultation, negotiation, conflict resolution and influencing skills at all levels, and the capacity to develop and manage effective relationships with all stakeholders and all levels of staff.
  • Substantial experience in the management of critical issues, development and implementation of proactive communication strategies.
  • A high level of written and verbal communication skills including the ability to write plain English content for a range of media.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing communication plans.
  • Ability to think creatively in a high-pressure environment while managing and prioritising competing activities and deadlines.
  • Be willing and able to work in a dynamic and fluid environment with the flexibility to work outside regular business hours during the evening and on weekends to meet the needs of a 24/7 media environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and post quality content to digital channels including websites and social media.
  • Current C Class drivers’ licence.

Other valuable skills you may have:

  • Experience in highly regulated or government environments.
  • Experience in delivering advice and training in media management skills to staff.
  • Digital production skills.
