City of Newcastle (CN) has an opportunity for an energetic and passionate Ranger to join our Transport and Compliance team. The role will require you to provide an after-hours response to serious breaches, gather evidence to substantiate any detected breach, and acts as an initial CN contact for complainants, Police and emergency services in relation to such.
Your commitment to provide high levels of customer service will be invaluable by providing courteous and professional advice and information. The role will also require you to keep abreast of legislative and policy changes in relation to practices, procedures and legal precedents.

To be successful in this job you will have:
- Experience in the humane care of animals and effective animal handling techniques including the capture of livestock, cats and aggressive or dangerous dogs.
- Experience and demonstrated competence in regulatory enforcement and demonstrated commitment and experience in a customer service environment.
- Knowledge of the provisions of the Companion Animals Act 1998, Local Government Act 1993, Protection of Environment Operations Act 1997 and Regulatory enforcement disciplines.
- Sound analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to competently address technical issues including an ability to apply sound mediation, conflict and negotiation skills.
- Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment with a customer service focus.
- Well-developed written and oral communication skills including sound computer literacy.
- Ability to manage work priorities efficiently and to work independently with a minimum of supervision.
- Experience in the gathering of evidence, effective interviewing and statement taking abilities, preparation of fact sheets, statements, briefs of evidence, the commencement of legal proceedings, representing Council and giving evidence before Local and Land and Environment Courts.
- Experience in dealing and resolving environmental health issues / complaints.
- Demonstrated customer service skills.
- Current Driver’s Licence.
Desirable
- A strong understanding of Companion Animal issues in the community as well as CN’s educational initiatives.
- Proven experience and demonstrated willingness to actively participate in and contribute to continuous review and improvement of team and organisational structure, service delivery and policies and procedure.
- Previous experience working in a regulatory role as a ranger in Local Government.
- Certificate IV in Local Government (Regulatory Services).
