City of Newcastle (CN) is seeking an Open Spaces Operations Manager to join our Parks and Recreation team, supporting the wellbeing of the community through the provision of places and spaces for active and passive recreation and protection of the natural environment.

In this varied and rewarding role, you’ll provide leadership to the team that provides on the ground services to the hundreds of passive and active reserves across the City, including parks, sportsgrounds, playgrounds and floral displays. You’ll work collaboratively with Recreation Planning, Projects and Sports Liaison and will lead a large operational team, with four direct reports.

Drawing on your qualifications and proven experience in a similar role, you’ll build and develop collaborative relationships with key stakeholders, both internal and external, to support the provision of operational services to the city-wide network of active and passive open spaces. You’ll provide leadership to operational teams that deliver high quality diverse horticultural services across the open space network, and will develop and promote a culture where staff are empowered to contribute to the purpose of the business unit, with a focus on creating a safe work environment where we look out for one another and gain satisfaction from the delivery of services for our community.

Amongst other responsibilities, you’ll manage the business unit in line with allocated financial budgets ensuring alignment to strategic and operational priorities, will implement a strong focus on delivering a positive customer experience, and will champion change and continuous improvement. You’ll also ensure legislative requirements are met and appropriate policies and procedures are in place to ensure the successful management of the business unit.

The essentials you’ll need:

  • Tertiary qualifications in horticulture, parks management, infrastructure maintenance or a related field
  • Extensive experience in the management of open space operations deemed equivalent to the level required for the role
  • Current and valid driver’s licence
  • Ability to obtain the NSW Working with Children Check

  • Demonstrated experience in the development and delivery of multi-faceted work programs
