City of Newcastle (CN) is currently seeking Casual Beach Lifeguards for the upcoming summer season. As a Beach Lifeguard you’ll supervise and manage CN’s beaches and ocean baths, providing an efficient and customer-centric service that minimizes risk for swimmers and beach users through effective surveillance, rescue and first aid management procedures.

The essentials you’ll need:

  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Effective public communication skills
  • Available to work weekends, public and school holidays
  • Ability to work without supervision
  • Problem solving skills
  • Hold current qualifications in the following:
  • SLSA Bronze Medallion
  • Advanced Resuscitation
  • Senior First Aid Certificate
  • Be able to complete a competency assessment involving:
  • A swim test of 800 metres in 14 minutes in a pool
  • A competency assessment involving a continuous “Lifeguard Mission” over an “M” shape course involving the following: 600m ocean swim, 800m beach run, 600m paddle on a rescue board (including negotiation of the surf break), and 800m beach run. (Note: overall times will be record for comparison with other candidates and considered in the context of the prevailing surf conditions on the day of assessment)
  • The use of a rescue tube and rescue board
  • Experience as a professional lifeguard or extensive experience as a patrol member of a surf lifesaving club
  • Experience with 2-way radios and PA systems
  • Knowledge of WHS requirements relevant to the position
  • Working with Children Check
  • Drivers Licence

Other valuable skills you may have:

  • PWC licence
  • Excellent customer service and liaison skills
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with staff and all beach user groups
  • Ability to embrace change in the work environment
