City of Newcastle (CN) is seeking passionate Visitor Services Officers (VSOs) to join the Newcastle Museum team, encompassing Newcastle Museum, Fort Scratchley Heritage Site, and Museum Park. Newcastle Museum is committed to telling the stories of both ordinary and extraordinary Newcastle through our collections, exhibitions, and audience engagement and are committed to providing the best and broadest museum experience, which is not only fun and attractive but is intellectually significant and beneficial to the community.
As a casual VSO you’ll have reasonable availability for both weekend and weekday work and will provide frontline customer service. You’ll be the face of Newcastle Museum for our visitors with the aim of providing visitors and venue clients with an enjoyable and memorable experience, exceeding their expectations. In addition to providing insightful and useful information to our visitors and assisting as required, Newcastle Museum will also rely on you to keep the museum safe and to relay information from our visitors to behind the scenes staff.
Drawing upon your exceptional communication and customer experience skills, key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: attending to visitors’ needs, answering queries, giving directions and providing general information or referrals to staff; ensuring the security of visitors, staff and the collection; assisting with opening and closing the museum and exhibitions; maintaining the exhibition floor and associated areas in a good state of general appearance, reporting any issues to relevant staff; operating POS to sell temporary exhibition and event tickets including cash handling and reconciliation; assisting with setting up for functions and public programming; and liaising with event clients, as required.

The essentials you’ll need:
- Strong commitment to engaging diverse visitors with culture and/or history and/or science.
- A high level of oral communication skills, excellent personal presentation and ability to interact with all levels of staff / community.
- Demonstrated high degree of enthusiasm, curiosity and commitment to Newcastle Museum and the city. Desire to assist visitors to enrich their experience. Ability to advocate and promote on behalf of the Museum.
- Working collaboratively with honesty and transparency, encouraging bold ideas and supporting freedom of expression, innovation and diversity.
- A current Working with Children Check number or willingness to apply for one if selected for the position.
- Physical capacity to participate in venue hire set up.
Other valuable skills you have:
- Demonstrated commitment to compliance and the promotion of WH&S.
- Dealing with difficult people or armed hold up training.
- Demonstrated experience working in a cultural institution, customer/community service, events or tourism role.
- Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) Certification.
