City of Newcastle (CN) is seeking a highly-motivated leader to join our Depot Operations team, overseeing the operation of CN’s Mechanical and Tyre Workshops. Depot Operations is a team of 30+ staff that enables other services within CN to operate at their service potential by providing and maintaining sustainable, fit-for purpose plant/fleet asset services and operational works depot management to the organisation.

As the Workshop Manager, you’ll have 5 direct reports and 19 indirect reports and will draw upon your proven leadership skills to manage CN’s Mechanical and Tyre Workshops, ensuring the highest level of maintenance standards are performed when servicing and repairing CN’s fleet of vehicles, plant, and equipment. You’ll also ensure CN secures and retains ongoing accreditation under the National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Scheme.

Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, providing strategic direction and advice to the Manager Depot Operations and other key stakeholders; providing leadership to develop an effective, highly motivated and harmonious team; leading all aspects of the programmed maintenance system for CN Fleet and equipment; ensuring safe work practices are implemented and adhered to; managing all NHVAS accreditation requirements; and continually monitoring all internally and externally provided services to ensure efficient and economical delivery.

The essentials you’ll need:

  • Light or Heavy vehicle mechanical qualification, or substantial experience in a similar role, coupled with decisive reactive failure capabilities.
  • Proven management skills.
  • Proven ability to prepare and manage budgets and analyse operational data to prepare reports and recommendations.
  • High level written and oral communication skills.
  • Computer literacy including experience using Word, Excel, Outlook and WHS systems.
  • Excellent customer service and negotiation skills.
  • Experience preparing budgets and management reports.
  • Thorough understanding and commitment to WHS.

Other valuable skills you may have:

  • Post trade qualifications and / or RMS Heavy Vehicle Authorised Inspection Scheme qualifications.
  • Experience in operation of computerised fleet management information systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage workplace change and implement new systems.
