City of Newcastle (CN) is looking for a capable people leader to drive culture change in the Road Maintenance team, leading 6 direct reports and 62 indirect reports. You will play a significant role in the broader Civil Construction & Maintenance Service Unit leadership team, working closely with the other 3 Managers and the Service Unit Manager.

This role would suit someone who has experience leading organisational and culture change in a team. Taking on a ‘hands-on’ mentoring approach, you’ll be responsible for monitoring staff efficiency and effectiveness through proactive management including performance development, performance management, competency training and assessment, dispute resolution and workplace conflict.

The Road Maintenance team that you will be leading is responsible for the proactive and reactive repairs of Newcastle's road assets. You'll ensure the delivery of civil infrastructure maintenance of the road network, piped and natural drainage assets and ancillary facilities on local roads, public reserves and foreshore areas that is cost effective, timely and meets the quality expectations of City of Newcastle.

Key responsibilities in this role include developing and managing the Road Maintenance's Operational and Capital Works budget to the value of circa $13 million, providing technical advice to stakeholders in line with local government legislation, performing people management activities and providing expert advice on matters of public liability.

The essentials you’ll need:

  • Degree in Civil Engineering, or equivalent relevant qualification and significant experience in Civil Infrastructure Construction and Maintenance.
  • High level people management skills, with demonstrated success leading a team to be capable and accountable through effective coaching and performance management.
  • Experience in Tendering, Project Management and Contract Management.
  • Knowledge and experience in the application of Work, Health & Safety and Quality, Safety & Environment legislation and systems.
  • Demonstrated experience negotiating and influencing a range of stakeholders – including senior managers, other government agencies, corporate clients and internal employees.
  • Class C Driver’s Licence and White Card.

Other valuable skills you may have:

  • Qualifications in Project Management and / or Leadership.
  • Local government experience and knowledge of relevant legislation.
  • Traffic control accreditation.
