Integrated Water Cycle Engineer - Flooding

With the recent approval of our Newcastle Environmental Strategy the City of Newcastle's newly established Environment and Sustainability Service Unit is looking for an experienced Integrated Water Cycle Engineer to join their team.

As the Integrated Water Cycle Engineer - Flooding you will lead CN's flood risk management program, including undertaking flood studies, advising on flood management, emergency response and mitigation works, managing CN's Flash Flood Alert System, ground water and sea level rise monitoring.

You will apply your skills and technical knowledge to lead the development, appraisal, and implementation of CN's flood studies and flood risk management investigations.

As the subject matter expert, you will also provide specialist advice to internal and external stakeholders and the community regarding the application of best practice flood risk and water cycle management into CN's policies, plans and projects, state government and stakeholder projects. This will include executive management and councillor briefings and representing CN at external advisory workshops.

Core Projects for the role:

  • Project manage and lead the technical working group overseeing the Hexham and Woodberry Swamp Flood Study.  This will involve facilitating input from Maitland and Cessnock Councils and DCCEEW, grant management and the re-establishment of CN's flood risk management committee.
  • Review of CN's Flash Flood alert system against current best practice, and upgrade recommendations.
  • Facilitate Executive Management, Councillor and community awareness of the outcomes of the Lower Hunter Flood Plain Cumulative Infill and its integration into in CN's planning framework.
  • Investigate opportunities for community engagement and education on flood risk.
  • Internal advice for flood impact queries, particularly within high flood risk areas such as Wallsend and Broadmeadow, with a focus on achieving multiple benefit outcomes.
  • Support for flood risk emergency management, and the development of the water-sensitive cities action plan.
  • Representing CN in external stakeholder forums and workshops.
