About the team
City of Gold Coast in conjunction with partner agencies and organisations coordinates activities during a disaster event to minimise loss of human life, illness and injury to humans, property loss or damage, and damage to the environment. This is achieved through strategic decision making by the Local Disaster Management Group and operational activities coordinated by the Local Disaster Coordination Centre.
The Disaster and Emergency Management Unit is responsible for ensuring that we have effective disaster management arrangements to enable us to mitigate, prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from disaster events.
The Unit provides critical support to the Gold Coast Local Disaster Management Group. This is achieved by working collaboratively with emergency services and other crucial partners to manage community impacts from disaster events.
The Unit also enables the operation of our Local Disaster Coordination Centre by maintaining high levels of readiness, coordinating and conducting disaster management training, implementing training exercises and maintain the technology and support systems.
About the role
The Senior Disaster Management Officer leads the delivery of disaster and emergency management outcomes for the City of Gold Coast, leading programs and projects that strengthen operational capability and community resilience. Operating from the City’s state-of-the-art Disaster and Emergency Management Centre, the role rotates across teams to lead and deliver initiatives outlined in the Unit’s Plan, while managing key partnerships to support a coordinated “One City” approach across prevention, preparedness, response and recovery.
We’re looking for people who have:
- Relevant qualifications in Disaster Management (Advanced Diploma Public Safety - Emergency Management) or a related discipline, or equivalent demonstrated experience delivering disaster and emergency management outcomes in a complex operational environment (desirable)
- Working with Children Check (Blue Card QLD) (Mandatory)
- Highly developed verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear briefings, reports and correspondence for a range of audiences
- Confidence in dynamic and time‑critical environments, including contributing to coordination centre operations
- Proven ability to build, maintain and leverage effective working relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders, including government agencies, non‑government organisations, and community partners
- A strong understanding of the role local government plays in supporting communities before, during and after disaster events, coupled with a genuine commitment to serving and improving outcomes for the community
