About the team

Located in Environment Heritage and Resilience Department (embedded within the Planning and Regulation Department), as an Environmental Assessment Officer you will work with a range of internal and external stakeholders. You will provide consistent, high quality expert advice and decision making on the assessment and management of development applications in accordance with environmental local, state and commonwealth legislation, objectives, policies and guidelines, and within statutory and business timeframes to ensure the City's natural landscape and biodiversity is protected and enhanced.

About the role

In this role you will provide consistent, high quality expert advice and decision making on the assessment and management of development applications in accordance with local, state and commonwealth environmental legislation, objectives, policies and guidelines, and within statutory and business timeframes to ensure the City's natural landscape and biodiversity is protected and enhanced.

Duties will include but not limited to:

  • Provide advice on Environmental matters to achieve balanced and holistic outcomes for development and the environment
  • Negotiate with development consultants, developers, and Council officers (other Internal Referrals/Departments) to achieve balanced environmental outcomes
  • Provide responses to requests and enquiries from Council officers, applicants, developers, consultants, members of the public & other Government agencies
  • Overseeing and implementing effective bushfire management strategies and practices to ensure safety and mitigate risk.
  • Attend meetings such as pre-lodgements, DA Solutions, without prejudice, site, internal and external meetings
  • Provide technical advice, feedback and support/leadership to the Team, including team process improvement and input into City Plan as a key stakeholder.
  • Support the Coordinator by undertaking review of general enquiries and other tasks.

We’re looking for people who have:

  • Experience in environmental planning and assessment, adhering to statutory timeframes, and able to provide advice on a diverse range of environmental issues relating to development assessment and City Plan or similar experience
  • The role assists in the assessment of Material Change of Use, reconfiguring a Lot and Operational Works applications for proposed development within the city measured against statutory requirements and City Plan.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with an emphasis on consultation and negotiation and exceptional time management
  • Experience in flora and fauna surveys and assessment is advantageous but not mandatory as training will be provided
  • A current class C driver licence.
