About the role
Under the guidance of the Principal Electrical Engineer, we are seeking to appoint an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer to join our team.
Key Role Responsibilities:
- Lead and undertake detailed power system studies including arc flash assessments, load flow analysis, short circuit studies, and protection coordination for Council-owned electrical assets.
- Develop, maintain, and verify electronic power system models using approved analysis and design software such as PowerCAD and SKM PowerTools, ensuring accuracy, traceability, and compliance with relevant standards.
- Conduct technical reviews and verification of power system analysis outputs prepared by internal staff or external consultants, providing senior technical assurance and certifying specialist support where required.
- Undertake direct electrical site investigations, including inspection of switchboards, substations, protection devices, and distribution systems, to validate installed conditions against system models and documentation.
- Assess existing low voltage (LV) and high voltage (HV) electrical systems to determine arc flash risk levels, equipment suitability, and compliance with applicable Australian Standards, legislation, and City policies.
- Provide expert technical advice on arc flash mitigation strategies, including system configuration changes, protection settings, equipment upgrades, labelling requirements, and safe work practices.
- Support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the City’s Arc Flash Program, including technical standards, procedures, templates, and governance frameworks.
- Collaborate with asset owners, operations, maintenance teams, and project managers to integrate arc flash outcomes into asset management, capital works, and operational planning.
- Review electrical design documentation and studies prepared by external consultants to ensure alignment with power system analysis outcomes, safety-in-design principles, and RPEQ obligations.
- Prepare clear, accurate, and auditable technical reports, calculations, and recommendations suitable for regulatory, operational, and executive stakeholders.
We’re looking for people who have:
You are a highly skilled Senior Electrical Engineer with strong experience in power system analysis and a passion for improving electrical safety across complex infrastructure environments. You bring proven capability in conducting and reviewing arc flash assessments, developing accurate electronic power system models, and translating technical analysis into practical, risk-based outcomes.
You have hands-on experience using power system analysis and design tools such as PowerCAD and SKM PowerTools, and you are comfortable validating models through direct electrical site investigations of low and high voltage installations. You understand how electrical systems operate in the real world and can confidently bridge the gap between installed assets, design documentation, and analytical studies.
You are detail-oriented, safety-focused, and confident operating in an RPEQ environment, providing sound engineering judgement and technical assurance. You communicate complex technical concepts clearly to a wide range of stakeholders and work collaboratively with asset owners, operations, maintenance teams, and project managers to deliver compliant, practical, and sustainable outcomes.
You take ownership of your work, apply strong professional ethics, and are motivated to contribute to the continuous improvement of the City’s Arc Flash Program and broader electrical engineering practices.
Key Qualifications & Skills:
• Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering and RPEQ (Electrical) or eligibility
• Demonstrated experience in arc flash studies and power system analysis
• Proficiency in power system modelling using PowerCAD and/or SKM PowerTools
• Hands-on experience conducting electrical site investigations (LV and HV)
• Strong knowledge of Australian Standards, safety-in-design, and electrical risk management
• Ability to provide clear technical advice and assurance to a range of stakeholders
